How large of an exhaust is needed for around 400 hp??

Car: 1989 Iroc-Z
Engine: 5.7L TPI
Transmission: 4 Spd Auto
How large of an exhaust is needed for around 400 hp??
I was just wondering if you could run 3" or would you need 3.5" for around 400 hp and 450 tq. A guy came here on the weekend with his iroc and he had 3.5" into a flowmaster but it was so loud. It was a crappy stock 305 TBI and it was gutless as hell, but like when he was on the phone in the car I could hear the exhaust in the background. Would going to a quieter muffler just fix that?? Thanks.

you will be on the edge of the limits of 3in, I would go with 3.5. The reason that exhaust probably sounded crappy is because it was behind a gutless car. Put it on yours and it will sound good. If you want a quieter muffler and just as good flow, try a hooker aerochamber.
