Problem with T56 and Hooker Long Tubes for 1991 Z-28's car

Problem with T56 and Hooker Long Tubes for 1991 Z-28's car

I'm trying to get some second opionions on what to do about this problem. Here are some photos that explain it. The collector is touching the bell housing which will not allow installation of the headers on to the head. What do you guys think? Roy at thirdgenresource said the only way is to either replace with shorty's or grind away. I thought the sme way about grinding but is it safe to grind on the collector or bellhousing?

what part # are those headers? as for help ,,,,,, can you heat it with a torch enough to bend them out slightly . dont know what it would do to the coating though.

dang you are SCARING me! I have a set of thirdgen Hooker LT's in the basement next to the miniram, next to the AFR195 cylinder heads! Right next to THAT is a box full of T56 pedals....

Maybe we should have pre-fit before getting them Jet Hot coated. That way we could have cut & rewelded the collector in order to clear the bell housing. I suppose you could do that, then send out for a recoat.

It only looks like you need an 1/8 of an inch, if that. Brake out the grinder, and start taking some off the bell housing first.
Doesn't even look like it's to near a bolt hole, so you'll be fine.

Agreed on moving the knock sensor. I don't see a problem with grinding on the bellhousing right there a little. That is just the outer area of where the slave mounts so it isn't really all that big of a deal if you clearance it a little...... There is plenty of AL there to support the slave after you clearance it.

I have a couple questions though.... what crossmember are you going to run? What are you doing for a Y-pipe?

The design of the hooker LT's demand that you pass the exhaust pipe under the transmission crossmember. This is because the long tubes dump BETWEEN the front subframes. If you are using a spohn crossmember then you will have significantly less ground clearance than with a stock crossmember. "It won't be a problem" is a matter of opinion. The spohn crossmember hangs significantly lower than a stock crossmember.

This is true. I'm going to have the same kinds of problems, since I have an early design Spohn 700R4 crossmember & torque arm. I am thinking of either getting a different torque arm & crossmember design, or in having Steve fabricate a custom crossmember that accomodates clearance for Hooker Long Tube Y-pipes. It's got to be possible, somehow. I'm going to have to change over due to the T56 different mounting points, anyway. I wonder if Steve is thinking about this issue...

Since someone asked for these over on the CamaroZ28.com board, I thought I'd mention it here. I have a bunch of stick-on T56 shift pattern plates for your console. .016" aluminum plate in black textured powdercoat and laser etched shift pattern in white. I'm selling them for $12 including postage. Created 'em myself with a buddy of mine named Dave Zug about a year ago. We occasionally sell them on EBAY for $20.

Anybody want one?

See them here and ignore the retail price.

FWIW - I e-mailed Steve awhile back asking about making something to work with the longtubes. I don't have his response with me at work this morning but, in short, Steve said that he will NOT be doing this. He said that if he does anything then he will be making a y-pipe for the longtubes that works with his crossmembers (possibly taking a different routing?). Personally, I don't see how this is possible while keeping good ground clearance unless it's a high dollar y-pipe with oval tubing.

First, I agree with the "fixes" that have been stated, move the knock sensor, and grind the bell. - As for the clearance, I'm about switch in a 5-speed and Headman LT's. I plan on building a crossmember that loops upward on both sides of the tranny. I'm going to run the headman universal x-pipe, and put 2 Aerochambers w/ dumps where my rear seat lumps used-to be. Then I await some money saving for the Richmond 6-speed...
