Exhaust Backfire....O2 sensor causing it?

My GTA is like 15 years old..I don't think the 02 sensor is any good cause when I go WOT the SES comes on....but anyways...today I was racing a Mustang and I left him behind...he was behind me at the next light and I reved and a pop came out through my exhaust...what the heck could be causing this...at WOT it won't do it...regular acceleration it won't do it...only when I am reving up in neutral...what could be the prob? what should I check..I did a search and I am going to check the pipes and lines EGR? where is the EGR and i need to get a new PCV valve...well we'll see what happens...please help.....AARON

p.s. I also forgot to mention...would a clogged cat do that too? and if I straight pipe the cat....would this help

More likely than not the problem is air being pumped into the headers when it should be diverted from the air pump. This ignitess the unburn't fuel. If you have a O2 code that too could be related. Air being dumped in the headers at the wrong time also floods the O2 with air. Disconect hoses from check valves at headers and going to the cat. Start car and see if exhaust comes up through any of the check valves. If so they are bad and the air management vavle is probley burn't up.
