The X-pipe

All the little 5.0 stangs I know have X-pipes(like an H but no tube connecting between the two main tubes, instead they cross each other and are connect that way hence X pipe), I don't know if any of you have heard of them but it supposedly equals the flow from each header. Do any Camaros have them?? Or is it just some piece of Ford crap that won't help performance?

I think all it does is make the sound a bit smoother. I doubt any performance gains.

The Ford factory pipe is an H-pipe not an X-pipe. There is some advantage with the x-pipe over the h-pipe. The scavaging effect is greater and there is a better torque curve as well. As for a third gen camaro the stock exhuast is a single pipe from the cat back to the muffler so a x-pipe would be out of the question. If you intend to drag race only then you could use a custom dual exhaust if you wanted.

i would think that it would flow better than an h-pipe, because instead of the exhaust having to make a 90 degree bend, the transition,is smoother..

In the June 2001 issue of "Hot Rod they did a test on a 442 cid Olds small block. The test used a totally open exhaust, duals with muffler's, duals with muff and an 'H', duals with muff's and an 'X'. The best HP was benerated by the totally open exhaust. The plain duals and duals with 'H' suffered significant power loss. The duals with 'X' suffered a minor horsepower loss but gained torque, while significantly quieting the exhaust(vs the open exhaust and duals with no-crossover).

The results:
Open Exhaust -
430 hp @ 6850, 384 lbs/ft @ 5600

Duals w/no crossover -
412 hp @ 6650, 371 lbs/ft @ 5600

Duals w/H-pipe -
419 hp @ 6600, 378 lbs/ft @ 5600

Duals w/X-pipe -
428 hp @ 6600, 391 lbs/ft @ 5600

All of the tests were done on a chassis dyno.
