hello, i'm moving out to california via roadtrip, and I really want to bring my 1984 Firebird, as it has some sort of sentimental value to me, hehe, What do I have to do prepare it for California Emissions?

I moved away from California 8 years ago, so it may have changed now. Back then, though, if you brought a non-California built car (i.e., federal emissions certified) into the state, there was a one-time fee of something like $300, plus normal inspection and testing.
One of you left-coasters will have to verify or refute that.

If you bring a non-California car into the state it is still reqired to pass the states emmisions tests. That $300 fee that was mentioned no longer exists. California supreme court ruled it un-constitutional and everybody received thier $300 back. So yes your car will have to be inspected and required to pass the Califronia smog **** trials.

Also check the emissions sticker under the hood by the radiator to see if it is a 50-state car or just 49-state. Even if it runs clean enough to pass smog, if it is a 49-state car you will not pass the visual inspection. And changing the sticker doesn't help, they run your VIN.

San Jose, eh? That happens to be where I'm sitting as I write this.
San Diego is where I left when I went to Colorado.
No, don't miss it much...

You mean the California Supreme Court actually did something right? Amazing!

No, heading back home Thursday morning. Wish I could be there and not be away from home at the same time...
