exaust manifolds are connected to the engine. They are usualy made of cast iron. We try to replace these with headers. Headers are usualy made of steel and are formed from steel tubing. On our cars, the "Y" pipe comes after the manifolds or headers. After the "Y" pipe comes the cats. If your car came with 2 cats, then they are part of the "Y" pipe. After the cats comes the catback. The catback consists of an intermediate pipe between the cat and the muffler, the muffler, and then lastly the rear pipes. The muffler and the rear pipes are behind the rear axle of the car. The muffler and rear pipes are sometimes refered to by themselves as a rear section exaust system. This is like a catback system but without the intermidiate pipe, or "I" pipe.

that was the "not so simple answer" for the not so simple question.

the simple answer for the simple question is: "everything from the cat(alytic converter) back".
