"Not a chance"

I really hate bergan county NJ i only go to school here.
anyway i decide to take a trip to see how much it woudl be to have the shop install my headers an y pipe.
one place told me about 6 hours then i went to midas and before i could finish he responded with "not a chance" i couldnt believe it he said my car was too old and he would not do it on an F0dy!
i was verry PO'D i thought shops had to do whatever i wanted!
anyway it looks like i'll have to do it in my school parking lot after all

Would you really wanna pay someone to change your headers? I mean, yeah, its a pain in the butt, but its not as involved as changing the heads I'd think.

This is one mod I'd rather do myself.

Yup, that's how most exhaust shops feel. I mean , would you rather spend 6 hrs doing a set of headers, that can be a pain, or change 20 mufflers for example and get the same amount of $.

Least, that's how I think the muffler shops think.

Get a friend, and tackle it yourself, just takes time.

Plus, doing it yourself will help you learn a little more about your car. Once you do it, it's a whole lot easier if you have to do it again.

the header problems never end huh. ohh i remember my header install...like it was a month ago...well it was a month ago....seriously though...it isnt that hard to do....the hard part is geting the old off, once thats done you know exactly what to do, ...its all a matter of reaching the damn bolts in the back thats a pain...other than that....set aside a whol eweekend...dont expect it to work out in 6 hours....and spray the hell outta EVERY bolt you are going to touch with wd-40, liquid wrench...either or.. and let it soak for a whole day.......use aggression when trying to get the new headers in....works faster that way...lol.....midas around here gave me the same "yeah rite" response, and another shop wanted about 400 dollars to install the headers....just look at it this way....how long would it take you to make 400 dollars working....as opposed to how long it would take you to install them yourself....

Do whatever you want huh? All shops have the right to decline work. They don't "have" to do anything. And Midas... "Yeah, we do that!"

Like everyone else said, do it yourself. Yeah it takes time. In fact it is a real pain in the *** the first time you do it. But, you save a good amount of cash, and you learn something in the process.

Most every time I'm in one of those shops (for some type of thing I can't do myself like alignment), there's another customer handing over the plastic for a $400-600 repair bill. They probably spent 1-3 hours to earn that charge. Why would they want to spend 6 hours to get less than that out of you? Especially a non-standard job, with parts they can't charge you more than they paid for (where a good chunk of the profit on the $600 bill comes from), which they have to devote a stall/lift for almost an entire day, etc., etc., etc.

Look around for do-it-yourself shops. I haven't tried for quite awhile since I've had my own garage to work in, but they used to be around, at least.

Do it yourself shops work by renting you the shop/part of the shop for X amount of $$ an hour but you get to use their stuff. I'm not sure on specifics though, never used one before.

Those "rent a shop" are usually good deals. The one around here I used to use before I worked at the dealer charged $20/hr for the lift, a huge assortment of tools, and a few ASE masters on hand.

i bet it is, but my lift is a floor jack and two jackstands. i would venture and say that there are thousands of dudes out there which use a floor jack and a couple jackstands as their "lift", and it works just fine. jack up the car from the front crossmember and stick the jackstands under the subframes. then i usually get a piece of wood and jack up the car even higher

If it was easy, there wouldn't be anything special about it.

No one has to serve you if they don't want to! Most shops don't like getting attached to peoples cars (like yours) because they can have so many problems because they're old. Then people think the shop caused their MAF sensor to die and their spark plugs to foul when they installed headers and such

You have to go to a performance shop. There is a place by me "Greenes" that is meant only for go-fast work, and working on classics.

With an attitude like that, I wouldn't want them working on my car anyway. Do you think it would be their "best" work, whatever that may be? If they thought it was hardly worth their time it seems to me it would end up being rushed and done half-a**ed.
And they would probably still want too much money. That's why I do most of the work on my car.
