When mine went bad, My car would not rev as easy as before, you will notice a little bit of a smell that in my mind is the "burning cat smell". You will also notice lots of power loss.

It will probably also rattle when shaken. The smell comes from a rich mixture that results from no airflow(clogged cat). Your cat is full of grids that will break over too many years of impact. This is what cloggs it up.

ATOMONKEY,
When the cat goes bad (begins to rattle) can it also cause the engine to run hot?

if the exhaust cannot escape as fast, heat will build up and cause overheating, but I think only to a minor degree.
