quietest exhaust setup
quietest exhaust setup
Hey all, first post. I've been reading quite a bit, i think the plan i want to go with for my exhaust is the quietest setup available, with a cutout (or two for duals) immediately after the headers for those moments at a stoplight when somebody just NEEDS to be drowned out by american V8. I have no emissions restrictions. What is the quietest setup available, single or dual exhaust, what sort of muffler, cat, etc?

welcome to the boards. as for the quietest exhaust, other than facorty, it would be the dynomax super turbo system. i had this system and it sounds good but not loud. it has a nice tone to it. it also flows real good. get the one with the 3" intermdiate pipe. if you dotn have emissions, put a piece of 3" pipe where the cat was. as for the cutout, it should go right after the y-pipe.
duals flow great but require more work and usually cost to maintain good ground clearance. to make the dual exhaust not too loud go with 2 dynomax super turbo mufflers. again these mufflers flow great, but are not ridicolously loud. if you are also put cutouts in, the should go in right after the headers on each side (say like a foot or less from the collectors).
personally i hate the factory routing of the exhaust and went with true dual exhaust, but this option is not the best for everyone.
hope that helps. if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for the input, I've talked to some other people off the boards too, and some reccomended keeping the stock exhaust, and just installing cutouts immediately after the headers and before the y-pipe and cat. Is there a catback system that is queiter than stock? Flow isn't really important since i'll open the cutouts for serious power, for the catback, lack of noise is the top priority.

The quietest possible set up would have to be a stock set up, with a non-crossflow muffler. That means only one tail pipe coming out the back. I had that on my 5.0l Formula and at idle you could hardly hear the car! It was really well in tune however.
Regarding your cutouts, I was watching the Horsepower TV segment on TNN and they had a trick power cutout gate they were using on one of their project trucks. It is a little assembly (roughly 6" by 6") that welds into your exhaust and is wired to a switch in the interior. With a flick of the switch, the gates redirect exhaust from the stock pipes out a dump pipe (so you don't have to crawl under the car to do it manually). That would be really cool to have control over the cutouts from the interior (for on demand power and intimidation). I'm sorry I didn't get the name of the manufacturer. As for quiet exhaust, I run a flowmaster muffler and it's really quiet. You can barely hear it (until you get on it).

Quicktime and the McCord Power Plate are 2 of the manufactures of electornically controlled cutouts. definetly nice and convient.

just get some long tube headers with 3'' collectors and leave it open-headered under your dash. youll be so busy with the eye-searing fumes you wont notice the noise !!!!!!
seriously though flowmaster makes some quiet ones

Dynomax is Definitely Quiet
I've got the 2.5" set up on my 'Bird. It was a definite seat of the pants improvement, though I'm wishing I went 3" for the 350 I'm currently building up... live and learn I guess. If you pop off your air cleaner lid when she's warmed up, and do a quick full throttle sprint, the exhaust isn't so quiet anymore
Not that it poses a problem. :-D I'm planning an open element air cleaner so it will make things louder, but the tone is very nice. It also improved my gas mileage by about 2 mpg. I'm sold on it.
BTW, Summit Racing seemed to have the best prices on the Dynomax products lately... For what it's worth.
