If you have no exhaust at all, I would go to a junk yard and get one from a wrecked car. I don't know about the smog cops where you live, though. You should be ok as long as you get it from a car just like yours. If you had more $, I'd say get Edelbrock headers. Mine cost more than $300 alone, though.

$300 isn't going to get you very far with new stuff.
Look on the classifieds on these boards. I normally wouldn't recommend used exhaust pieces (even though my catback was - but it was California and like new). But, with your limited funds, that's about your only choice.
There's a guy parting out an '83 LG4 with what sounds like good headers and high flowing pieces. You might check that out.

The headers will be a problem most likely... NYS has a visual inspection which means they will investigate anything out of the ordinary. Headers are something that don't usually come smog legal... you need to hook the air pump to the headers, when they see the headers they will look to see if they are legal. When is the last time the car was inspected? I got most of a year to put emmisions equipment on my car since it had been stickered just a month previously. 300 is a little slim for exhaust back from the headers/manifold, I'm sure it can be done but I would try getting a couple hundred more for a better exhaust.
