Do I have a Clogged Cat?

I just got my 3" cat-back put on and I bought a cat from Napa, a universal fit I believe. I have heard when a cat is clogged it might glow or smell like rotten eggs. Mine isn't glowing, but tonite when I got on it, I smelled something that smelled like rotten eggs. Could it get clogged that quick or is it normal when you first get a cat?

Notice any less performance out of your car?

My friends cat is plugged and it smells like rotten eggs/sulfer.

Doesn't seem to have lost any performance. I guess I could G-Tech it to see how fast it is running, to see if I have lost any speed.

That smell is absolutely normal, only noticable onder certain (humid)weather conditions, nothing to worry about!

I don't want to gut it, because I am about to go thru emissions for the 6th time, this being the first time with a cat. Also I just spent $160 on the install of the cat-back and I don't have any money right now to cut it off gut it and re weld it.

Just take the cat off, and take a long screwdriver or something and jam out all the internals, looks like honeycomb stuff. This way it's like a straight pipe, yet it's still their for visual emissions.

A lot of Cats are just bolted on... If it's welded on then it's not so easy (obviously). There's not much you can do to mess up the process of gutting a cat, just make sure you get all the pieces of honeycomb out... you may need to readjust the carburetor after this is done, but there should be a slight gain in power... but it will probably not provide more than 1-2 Hp more than a high flow cat would... it's main benefit is that it is a free upgrade over stock.

Once you do it, don't go to any of the nosey shops in town to get it inspected, because if they knock on the cat they will know it's gutted... I provide this information only for educational purposes... I don't want to encourage anyone
