A.I.R Removal quick question
A.I.R Removal quick question
I am in the process of removing the smog pump and the associated garbage, got the pump off and hafl the air tubes on the pass. side.
My question is How do I remove the metal Tubing that runs behind the engine and connects the passenger and drivers side air tubes together?
Thanks
Josh

there is one going to the cat, and another going to the drivers side, its kinda big and will look tacky left in there. I could see leaving the cat "pipe" for lack of better term but the other tube needs to go.

Good luck getting the pipe out that goes around the back of the engine. I cut it off as far back as I could, then when I swapped the 5 speed out, I yanked it when the tranny was out.
There's no room to get it out, at least, I sure as HECK didn't have the patience to screw with it anymore than I did.
You couldn't see it with it cut off anyway.

It is a major pain to get done, & I managed to break something when I did it.
I took a hack-saw blade by itself on the passenger side & got what I could out that went down toward where my converter used to be.
Next, I started trying to work out the part that goes around the back by the firewall & after a bit became sort of frustrated with the lack of progress.
I pried on it & thought it was coming out without hitting anything, but when I started the car (after plugging all of the air exhaust manifold holes), I noticed oil squirting straight up from the back of the engine compartment. I had snapped off a little fitting that was possibly the oil pressure send unit, but whatever it was I ended up have to use an EZout to get the piece that was still in the manifold & then replace the fitting.
If I had it to do over again, I think I would try using something like a dremel tool which is small & reach back farther than what I could with the hacksaw blade.
Good Luck!

Technically there would be a gain seeing as belt driven accessories can draw *up to* 14hp or so. As far as the tube; just chop 'n' yank man, I happened to have the motor out so I cheated, but it sounds like you should be able to get it out regardless. Good luck.

Could you post pics and supply details on how and what parts to remove when eliminating the AIR pump.
Thanks in advance.

I just bought a serpentine setup for my car (I have already removed all my air smog stuff when I replaced the engine), the first thing I did to the serp setup was to take the air pump apart and take the guts out of it so it turns more freely. If you do this, just take the back off (4 or 5 bolts), remove the back plate, and inside you will find two composite vanes. I cut/broke them off and pulled them out and then put the pump back together. I just did this because 1. it cost no money and 2. I didn't want the open space in my acc. bracket.
