my exhaust idea......

I finally decided on my exhaust. Im going to use the Hooker 2460's(Jet Hot coated of course), into a custom 2.5in Ypipe following the stock location and setup of the original dual cat config. into a Flowmaster Y collector, then into a 3in I pipe over the axle into a Flowmaster Force II muffler........Any comments, or suggestions??? Im going to weld flanges on my cats so I can put them on for emissions testing and then take them back off.... Just wanted to see if anybody thinks of anything better or not.......My muffler shop can even mandrel bend 4in pipe if I should need it.... I wanted to go with the Hooker 2210's and Mufflex Ypipe, but people have said it would be too much for my "stock" L98.....they said big primary pipes make the engine "lazy" at slower rpms because of the exhaust gas velocity not being as high......?? Is there honesty in there opinions/suggestions? sorry this is kinda long....just want to make sure IM doing the right thing here....

Your plan sounds good. Why not just the 2055's though? I would not go 4 inch. Way too big for your setup. stick with the 3 inch catback and you will be set.

Tuning an exhaust system is a lot like choosing a camshaft or torque convertor. You want something that works in the RPM range that you intend to turn the engine most of the time. For example, I wouldn't want an exhaust that would work best in, say the 3000-7000 RPM range for a mostly stock daily driver, because it would flow TOO well. There are other factors such as cubic inch displacement and intake/cam/heads that can "tweak" this guideline, but I've gone on long enough.
It's all about picking out corresponding components.

Im just gonna go with the Hookers Lt's and Mufflex Ypipe....what the hell... I dont think Ill lose too much torque.....The Ypipe is still gonna go into the 3in Ipipe then into my Dynomax super turbo already on the car......I went ahead and ordered them tonite.....but does anybody know if Ill need a heated 02 sensor since it wont be in the original location???? how much do those run? I cant wait to hear what it sounds like.......might just have to get a bigger cam now...lol

Longtubes need a heated sensor. It's too far from the engine to the colletor & the exhaust cools too much.

Where can you get that? Would auto zone or a parts place like that have it? Or is it special order......? I might just check out the GM parts catalog and see if there is one in there....

Use an Delco AFS75 sensor & PT643 connector. The connector pigtail needs a ignition on 12v source & a good ground.

Thanks alot for the help...the headers just arrived today... Just waiting on the Mufflex Ypipe now.....I ordered the Y with the O2 bung already in it.... you think theres a difference in that or having it in the header? I guess it wouldnt matter if its heated right? Also, is there anything you have to adjust for the heated o2 sen??? Just making sure I dont need anything else... Ill post pics and some dyno numbers(since the dyno is right down the street) Im going there tom to get some baseline runs for the "before" and "after".......thanks again for the help

Shouldn't make a difference if it's in the collector or right after it in the pipe.

Well...I just got finished putting the headers on....whew....what a job. It wasnt as bad as I thought it would be. I didnt have to use an LT1 starter either....I put new motor mounts in, but not ES, just stock replacements. I didnt have any clearance problems although the passenger side was kinda close to the A-arm but not touching. I also went ahead and routed the wire for my heated O2 sensor, and wrapped the wire in "heat" wrap that I got from work....I think its the same stuff you put on spark plug wires so that should work ok......I cant wait to get my Ypipe and start this thing....it looks so awesome. No more pipes and hoses all over the engine(well, not as many) I appreciate all the help.....I will post pics when I get it finished.

Well...I only got to make one run yesterday...with the stock manifolds, catback etc. It was a decent run...the cars temp was about 190deg and the outside temp was about 75deg.

Heres what it run(Ill post actual dyno sheet later)

HP: 230@4800rpm
TQ: 315@3100rpm(with over 300ft lbs from 1500rpms)
Dyno was a Superflow 901

Those numbers arent too bad, but hopefully will go up with the better flowing exhaust. That was at the wheels also. The engine is basically stock with the exception of 1.6rr's and TPIS afpr set @52psi. I also made a custom prom for it which is MUCH better at managing BLM's then the stocker.

considering those are the types of numbers you should see at the crank with a stock motor, I would have to agree with you that they are not to bad at all. Can't wait to see what the exhaust does for ya. I love seeing before and afters.
