Question: what pipe is this?
Question: what pipe is this?
Hi guys, I was just wonder what the proper name for the pipe the connects to the hedder then follows down and connects to the cat? (1991 gta)
Of course I have 2 from each hedder into separate cats, but what is the name of that pipe?
The reason I ask is because they are leaking pretty bad and sound like a$$, so I need 2 good used ones, but until I get the name I don't know what to ask for!!!
Thanks in advance ,
Fredel

If its the Y-pipe you'd need only one.
The Y pipe just combines the exhaust from the left and right banks into one pipe.
If you had true duals then you wouldn't have a Y-pipe at all.
Follow the pipe from the cat back to the engine to see where it splits.

Well here's what it looks like, I just dove under the car...
There is a separate pipe from each of the hedders that run into each cat. So each hedder is connected directly to it's own cat.
THEN the cat's combine into 1 three inch pipe back to the muffler.
So the "Y" is actually after the cat's.
So what do you think? Is this stock or not? What do I look for in terms of replacing these pipes?
I just got a couple pics to help explain, take look and tell me what you think...

Even though you have dual cats, the pipe coming out from the manifolds/headers are still considered to be a y-pipe(s), even though it's really after the cats. Do you really have headers or do you have maifolds?
Maifolds: Junk yard, dealer, custom made.
Headers: manufacturer, custom made.
This is where you can get the pipes from. Hope this helps.

No. Headers have unique connection type and location by manufacturer, all of which are different from what the factory did with their manifolds..
You will either need to have an exhaust shop fabricate new pipes, or you may be able to get the pipes seperately from the manufacturer that made your headers.

WOW that was a long time ago we last posted on here, BUT I got a chance to go the muffler shop and they said there is NOTHING they can do to replace the y-pipe!!!
HOW CAN I TELL WHAT COMPANY MADE THESE THINGS!!
My exhaust is loud as hell on the passenger side (not the good sounding loud) and I can get it fixed...
ANY suggestions would be great...

I just got my Catco stainless system installed today and it is drool-worthy as far as cat systems go. It is a direct replacement for the stock dual cat parts (you'll need something custom to go from the ends of your headers to the systems down/y pipes). The installer was cocky about how well it wouldn't fit but after the install was impressed at how well and easily it went together!

So the manifolds, are the headers? Ok since im gonna replace my 3 inch single cat exhaust with a 1990 dual cat system, I dont need manifolds/headers? SO i can just use my stock headers and i wont need to order manifolds to put my dual system on?

.As for the headers, I know they are NOT Edelbrock or 1 3/4 SLP as I owned both of those and yours don't look like them

. Lol, your telling me! The guy just basically looked at them and said theres nothing he can do, you have to buy the y-pipe (which I don't know who the hell made the hedder's) or by a whole new exhaust!
And thanks Matt for letting me know, it help to narrow it down a bit...

Look on the 4 header pipes... with some brands (Hooker, Hedman) there is usually a stamped-steel badge welded on with their name on it.
Its usually on the pipe for the #1 cylinder (front drivers side)

Wild guess: Those are SLP's.
If you could get a picture from underneath that shows the connection from those rusted out pipes to the headers, that would probably nail it.

I would vote no on the SLPs at all as they use those seperate flange pieces for each primary (or pair for the center ones).
I would guess Flowtech or Hedman but I have never owned either, so.....

Great, this would be really good if one of you guys know what the hell type these are!
I'll try to take a pic of the connectors over the weekend, when I can get it up in the air.
Thanks for the help so far guys...
The real challenge would be, after we find out the make of these, is if the company still sells them!!
Fun.

Are they painted? If not, that's stainless, and only SLP has made 3rd gen headers from that material (that I'm aware, anyway). And, they've changed their configuration over the years. So, if that's an older set, it's a crap shoot whether they still have y-pipes available for them.
Considering the newest of our cars is 12 years old, and the factory quits stocking parts after 7 years, we aren't doing to badly with our aftermarket support.
You may have to resort to exhaust shop fabrication. Only other option if the pipes are no longer available is all new header set.
