Cat Bad?

how do i know if my cat is bad, right now my car spits out black specs of something and the exhaust burns my eyes and it has a really bad smell, the best way to describe it is like after u set off fireworks, that's what it sorta smells like. so is this my cat or is my carb Fu#@ed up.

When the catalytic convert begins to go out you may smell a sulfuric smell (sulfur is inside the catalytic converter - it reacts with the exhaust to remove the more harmful elements...a.k.a., its a catalyst!). Also, it should be rattling. It will start out subtly, then it will progress to the point where it sounds like you've got a dryer running underneath your car. Hehe.
