It depends on where you are if they check for the cat and other emissions equipment.

That's why many people hollow out their cat and run it like a straight pipe. Though it still looks like a cat is there.

You need to tune the ecm to compensate for the removal of your smog stuff. Street Lethal had problems with his 305 TPI after removing smog equipment until he tuned it to make up for the air not being sent into the exhaust manifolds. That's my best guess. As far as I know, he never got a code though. Make sure everything is connected right. The code might be completely unrelated. Also make sure your AIR tubes are capped, or you'll have an exhaust leak too. You don't need a reader. There are a few threads on here that explain how to use a paperclip to short out two pins to read codes. If you're going to do much with the car, I suggest getting DIY tuning equipment. I paid about $200 total for all of mine, and I can change my settings on the side of the road if I want.

Note that I run MAF (1989), and I had no problems or lost performance from removing my AIR, timeslips to verify. MAP on the other hand (1990 and up IIRC) I've heard it causes issues and lost performance.

Re: Pulling out the SMOG Crap!!

I got code 43 put a resistor on the knock sensor wire then to ground no help. Starting touching everything. Only had it 4 months got to the distributor and found it was loose and retarded along way. Adjusted the timing and tightened the bolt runs great. Do i still need to prodram the ECM? Thanks for the help.

You are aware of the fact that this thread pre dates you joining the forum by almost a decade, right? Some positions may or may not have changed over the years.

I have no idea why Koon brought this one back up from the dead...

And btw, my original statement was: "And sometimes the added backpressure of a cat can actually increase the performance of an engine." Which has been proven in the "magazines" as well. I don't think I ever said to use stock manifolds instead of headers, etc. But you decided to go off and list all the things that would absolutely positively be a negative restriction. Fine, if thats how you argue points than whatever.

But since your our new in house automotive expert, I'll back off now. Do you have a column in super chevy?

you are correct. I think people approach modifying tpi cars withe old 60's carb mentality.
