Well, first ya have to kill it, then, you take a very sharp knife...... what? wrong kind of cat???? oh, in that case:

Disconnect the exhaust from the back of the cat, move it out of the way so you can see in there. take a long semi-sharp object, (air hammer with panel cutter works REALLY good) and start busting up the honeycomb you see in there. it takes a little effort, but, once started, goes rather well. break it all up, and pull out what you can, (shop vac works nice here as well) and for the rest, just start the engine, rev it a couple times to clear out the rest of the stuff. bolt it all back together....

Have fun.

sure, a stiff sharp, (preferably metal) rod, about 18-24" long, and a hammer. The cat is fairly long, so you need something with pretty good reach, and that will stand up to being beat on with a hammer......

one my friends honda (i know)... we gutted the cat, got some water heater pipe bigger than his exhaust, cut it long ways, overlapped it to the size of his exhaust, and jbwelded it to size.

otherwise find something that will fit and use a hammer and file to fit. but good luck with that.

EDIT: FIND A HIGH TEMP PIPE. exhaust is 500+ degrees F

the best way to do it so that your car doesnt sound like ****:

cut the cat open...

pull out all the stuff inside so you just have the two shell halfs

put a pipe inbetween them, and weld everything around the pipe..

ive also heard of people stuffing a pipe in there so that all the exaust flows thru the pipe....

oh, and if you do just bust up the pieces, be sure to get everything out of there before you run the car... and if you bust up a screen and dont remove it, its a bigger restriction then if you just left it alone..

also, run the car with just the gutted cat on there and rev it a few times to blow out the rest of the cr-ap so that it doesnt go thru your exhaust.

I may sound stupid for asking this, but stick with me here, im an idiot for the most part...

What is accomplished by gutting the cat?
Does it change the sound of the exhaust?
Is it smog legal? (CA smog, sheesh....)
Would getting a bolt on pipe and a bolt on cat and swapping the
two (for smog reasons) work better?

Thanks for your patience....

You may want to also look at a newer high flow aftermarket CAT to maintain SMOG legality and avoid changing the DAMN thing back in for a smog check!

I work for the company that makes the ceramic substrate in your converter. The type you have is an older design (80's) and the new sustrates flow nearly what a straight pipe would. Plus you will be smog legal.

Good luck

i live in PA so i have to put up with the emmissions bull but anyways my car just got inspected a week ago so i was think gut the cat and run a straight pipe through it for a year until i have to get inspected again...

how much of a difference in flow and sound would a high-flow cat be from a straight pipe?

who makes the best high-flow cat?

I have a fully gutted cat, with no pipe in it, just the shell, with the 1/2" pipe coming off of it that is for emissions... and I still passed MA emissions

That is very hard to do.

I like to idea of unbolting the cat

A high ratio rear end is better for emmissions tests. Keeps the RPMs down.

High ratio rear end to help with emissions??? never heard that one before. 'round here all we gotta do is sit there and rev the engine in neutral for a lil bit with the sniffer in the pipe. therefore gears would have nothing to do with it. maybe it's different by you?? and we do it every 2 years so when i do it once i don't gotta worry about being legal for a while.
