New Cats Needed Please Help
New Cats Needed Please Help
Hey all,
I failed the emissions test and was told that I need to get new cats installed since mine were all worn out. They want to charge 1300 to change the cats. I have a 1992 Z28 with the 5.7 motor and and automatic transmission, o yeah and A/C. I found this site and think that this is the part I need and it comes with both cats includded. Does this look like the right part or should I just let them bend me over?

It's the right part, but I'd consider this first:

or you can get universal fit cats, they are smaller and cheaper so because they are smaller they may need to lengthen the pipes.

Go here and find the ones you need(you can email them for exact part numbers). Put them on your car anyway you can.....and take them to a good muffler shop and have them welded on. Shouldnt cost anymore than $20-30 to have them simply welded. But, are you talking about them simply replacing the cats??? or the entire exhaust? Who is doing the work? Car-X?Midas? DONT take it there...find a little custom shop somewhere...they can do it cheaper. Good luck man....

KYL, the page you linked to Jegs doesn't have anything that fits (unless you call universals a "fit"). I haven't been able to get out of an exhaust shop, whether national chain like Midas or a little custom shop, for less than $60 for several years. That includes the time that all I needed was to have exhaust pipes welded to the collector reducer (didn't even have to move the pipe, just weld around it - Charged me $60 and the welds leaked; took it back and they put muffler putty on the welds!).
The best bet is the choice that allows you to do the entire installation yourself without any special equipment.

universal fits are not a bad idea, they are smaller than the normal ones but adding a pipe on each end shouldnt cost much money, better than spending $300 for direct fit. I put one on my car and it cost me $5 for a pipe to put on there and $2 for the hanger bracket.

Sorry I posted before I saw the link for the Catco setup....that looks sweet....Im thinking of getting that actually. I didnt know they made that. Im going to order that today along with a Flowmaster Y collector to be put in right behind the cats...instead of having that restrictive looking piece that connects the two cats into the Hogring clamp......I would go with the Catco setup...looks easy to install also. Just wonder how good it will work with my Hedman headers Im getting????
