I am trying to learn more about exhaust systems in general and how to design newer and better ones... This is more for a university project for a formula car team and I am gonan be helping with making an exhaust setup for a Honda CBR engine.

Any info on where i can learn more about exhaust system in general or better yet anything for the honda CBR engine, pelase let me know

Thanks guys for the help

in all reality, to understand exhaust systems and find out how people have made it work better, I sugest you find a book on it.

Do yourself a favor and find one about domestic exhausts and write your paper on it. 8 cylinders will get you a good grade, 4 will get you clapping the erasers after class

LOL... love the sarcasm...

We are just building a formula race car from scratch sponsered by a bunch of people, and the engine they usually use as a Honda CBR bike engine, I cant complain, it gets the car going 0-60 in 3.5 or so...

It just for some research, thanks again

What school project are you doing this for? Sounds pretty cool. There is more to it than just exhaust design. Exhaust systems are designed based on a series of parametes just like anything else. One must understand fluid dynamics and compressible and non compressible flow. You also have to understand shock flow, heat and mass transfer as well. These are all things that you do not learn by reading a book. Each exhaust system is different based on what and how the motor is used for. Engine speed, load, and fuel consumption are all criterea that are designed into automotive parts. You have to determin how you want your engine to function and what kind of efficiencies does it need to maintain. You also have to take into account the thermal cycling of the exhaust and how that has an effect on the material and objects surounding them.

Yea i figured it was all that stuff, this is for a competition where around 130 universities compete in who has the best formula car based on a number of categories...

I got to Virginia Tech and we are usually in the top 10 every yr out of the 100+ schools that enter...

Thanks for the help guys

I am a second year student at RIT, and we enter into the formula and baja competitions every year. They're awesome to watch, I wish that I wasn't spending so much time writing code so that I could get involved.
