Exhaust for 82 Trans Am ?'s

Hello, I need to replace the exhaust on my 82 TA. It currently has it's orginal exhaust. I have searched and no one seems to offer a system for 82.... 83 up seems to be avalible everywhere.

The one and only option I have found (aside from custom work) is a system that is suppose to fit 82 untill 87 I think it was. It only has one muffler where as the stock set up has two.

What have others with 82's done or recommend doing?

I heard it's not possible to have a true dual set up, is this true?

If I were to order the aftermarket system for 82-87 TA's, is there a coating I could put on it? Where could I have something like that done?

Thanks in advance, Steve

I am also curious to know because I have an 83 Z and I have the same stock setup as you. The one with two mufflers.

You have two outlets, not two muffers. I have an 82 Pontiac Firebird that came equipped with an LG4. The exhust system had to outlets but a single muffer. I now have a complete SLP Y-Pipe, SLP catback(two outlets on the driver side), and a Catco 3 inch convertor. The system sounds great. The engine is a 350-TPI.

I have an 82 T/A that had the same 82 only exhaust set up. I recently had my cat removed, part of my Y pipe, and put in a new stainless steel high flow muffler. It was all custom done.

Based on research I have done on this board, the 82 uses the same hangers as other years for the exhaust system, so you can choose a post 82 cat back system. It's just that companies don't list a system that is a DIRECT replacement for the 82 system (with two mufflers and two outlets).

I always hear we should choose the system designed for the 350 TPI as it is the most free flowing. 87 to 89 I think?

do not know if it is true or not but I have read some place that the factory setup is not to bad. Free flow stainless steel system with a cat. I have a 83 TA with the dual muffler set up. anyone checked the price of replacement of the system? just curious what to expect when the times come.

Unless you've got some dreams of keeping this a factory-like restoration, your best bet is to toss the entire system.

The aforementioned (if not quite accurately) '86-'90 TPI single-cat system is the best aftermarket system out there. If you start with headers, like the Hooker 2055, a high flow cat like the Catco 9118, and a cat-back like the Hooker 16823, it will all basically bolt in there (minor hanger and A.I.R. modification may be necessary), and perform much, much better than any factory-type 2-muffler system.
