what is better tri-y or block hugger headers

I have the book that shows a few tricks and tips to imrpove power on a third gen Camaro and regarding headers it suggests to get tri-y headers instead of block huggers (or whatever they are called) because they give more horsepower at low rpms. Now every time I see headers in magazines and websites I mostly see the four pipes going into one (not a tri-y) and I am beginning to wonder if they exist. If so, are they better and which ones (model, brand etc) would you recommend for more horsepower at low rpms which is what I am looking for?. My Camaro is a 91 Z28 TPI LB9.

I dont know of anyone who still makes tri-y headers. I think SLP was the last to do it, and they stopped a long time ago. The block huggers are more for street rods then fbodies. You would also have to fab up your own y pipe.

There are several headers you can get for your car. Do a search or just scann the threads just on this page and you can find every single brand header for your car from shorties to long tubes. That book you have is the same one I have and that book is very out dated. The SLP Tri-y headers are long gone and the only time you can get them if someone has put them up for sale.

SLP made tri-y's for a while, but they stopped and now they're really hard to find, especially in good shape. What I would suggest is get a set of Hooker 2055's and the matching y-pipe. They're really nice headers and probably one of the best shorty headers made for thirdgens.

The book is titled Camaro Performance Handbook by David Shelby and was published in 1993, really old!. It has a beautiful blue Camaro in the Camaro which just happens to look exactly as my 305 manual Camaro (when it was new).

Yeah, my book is still widely sold in almost every Chevy magazine I see but it is really outdated. I have tried to call several of the places listed in the book which offer performance parts and all the phone numbers listed have been disconnected!!!.

I installed the SLP Tri-y 1 5/8" headers on my 1989 GTA. It was the biggest seat of the pants improvement I made. With street tires the biggest problem is getting any kind of traction. No problem at all burning the rubber off of my tires. I would like to move some of that torque up the RPM range.

I would have to agree with darbleinad. Block hugger headers will not fit. If that book told you that they would, I would be hesitant to believe anything else that that book said.
