A.I.R. = "Air Injection Reaction". There is a small air pump that adds air to the exhaust via a tubing manifold on each side to help burn off any unburnt fuel in the exhaust. It goes to the manifolds/headers when the engine is cold, and is routed to the cat when the engine is warm.
The O2 sensor sits in the exhaust stream (on the driver's side only on our cars) and senses the amount of oxygen available in the exhaust. The computer uses this information to tell the fuel control system whether to increase or decrease the amount of fuel being sent to the cylinders. It only becomes active after the engine has warmed up some. This is called "closed loop" operation.
