Slp Exhaust, questions on adding headers.

I have an 87 formula i bought a while back with 3" slp exaust. It has stock exaust manifolds and i don't know what to get for headers becuae im worried about what will fit with the exaust system there, i hear that short headers do almost nothing for performance, and that long tubes are not worth the work of putting in.

Also will either short or long tubes bolt to the stock Y-pipe? will a Y-pipe included with the headers fit into my SLP exhuast? im all confused over all this information. I need advise.

the car is making around 350 hp, and soon around 400 after cam swap and head work, im planning on adding nitrous or supercharger next after i figure out which works better with the engine set up.
so i will want exaust thats good for 500+ hp.

If you slp headers you will need their slip fit connecter from the Y pipe to the cat or exhaust. thats what I used.

Its been on since my engine swap 2 1/2 years ago and everthing is running great. The SLP set-up was a good decision on my part.

Wrong. Headers of any kind will allow your motor to make tons more power at ever RPM point. They do tremendous things for performance. I believe a stock 350 TPI will pick up 26 to the wheels with shorty headers, high flow cat, and cat back. Any headers that you buy that are tailored to our cars should come with a y-pipe. There are only a few that don't. All of those y-pipes will end in the same location allowing you to reuse whatever exhaust you have that is routed the same as stock. Sine the car has an SLP set-up on it you will have no problems. There may be a little fab work to connect the two but they will line up.

I have the 1 5/8 slp headers w/ y pipe and 3" pipes going into my Borla exhaust. Sounds real loud when you first start her up in the morning. Now all I need to do is put on my catco converter on. The headers is one of the best things you can do to open up performance on your f-body.

Thanks guys, Now, im assuming that if i buy long tube headers with a y-pipe, that means that after i eventually get the headers in there, the y-pipe should go to the same place that the stock y-pipe does?

Not true with long tube set-ups. That is an entirely different animal and are usually used for true duals or custom stuff. Nolong tubes come with a y-pipe for our cars. You have to buy an off the shelf on or get one fabbed up.

500+ hp might be a good canadate for a true dual set-up.

Check out the sticky at the top of the page for pics and ideas.
