Possible fix installing SLP headers w/o denting!

I read about a lot of you guys having to dent your SLP headers by the steering shaft. I remember something I saw/heard from a speed shop awhile back.

This guy was getting SLP headers installed on his IROC and it was hitting the steering shaft. The owner of the speedshop decided to swap the motor mounts with each other. It worked.

This is what I remember, I could be wrong, but I decided to share this bit of information with ya'll.

It is possible to swap the motor mounts to the opposite side right?

I am about to get headers and they will probably be SLP 1 3/4" so I am trying to find out all I can before the install.

some put in new poly mounts and the header still hit.

so for some reason on some cars u have to either dent the header like i did, or shave down the shaft itself.

No, I mean putting the left motor mount on the right side and the right motor mount on the left side. Would it work?

on switching left and right motor mounts cause they are the same. You could switch them and it won't change a thing unless one is newer than the other.

I put just one poly motor mount in the drivers side so they wouldn't hit. That worked great untill I decided to put the other poly mount in then it hit again.

I ended up pulling that steering shaft out and grinding it down so it wouldn't hit

Since the engine always torques the same way, if the motor mounts are worn, 1 would be compressed and 1 would be stretched. (Yes, I'm just guessing)

If that was the case, it would help if you swapped them. Maybe...

I had no problems with my SLP 1 3/4" headers in my 86 IROC. I did install poly mounts when I swapped the 350 for the 305, though. The headers fit the same with both the Sportsman II's, as well as my current AFR 195's.

Switching the mounts won't work, and I doubt replacing them will either. Poly engine mounts didn't solve my problem, and neither did moving the steering column as some suggested. In the end I just removed the intermediate steering shaft and ground it in the area of the interference. Looks fine, and it doesn't hurt the shafts strength. If you decide to grind the shaft, replace the rag joint while you're at it. Definately worth the $!

Mine hit when I installed them (1 3/4", no air, ceramic coating). I swapped the motor mounts for polys and the steering shaft went from hitting the header to just rubbing it. Then I elongated the steering shaft bolt holes in the firewall and moved the shaft another 1/4" away from the headers. No more problems. No grinding of the shaft, no denting the headers.

Makes you wonder why they just don't make them so that they fit right like other companies huh? SLP.
