Flowmaster???? Doesnt sound right

The guy i bought my car from said that he put a flowmaster on it. The muffler is new but the name of the muffler is facing up, so that i cannot read it. My car is not loud at all. It has some deep rumble but not much. THe car also has a nw cat but i am not sure of the brand and i am sure he didnt put a high flow on it. The worst part is, the old pipe that goes into the muffler has a huge hole in it and is rusted. I dont knwo hwat shop would re weld this old pipe back on with holes in it, they also re-welded the tips back on it with holes in it.

My question is, with the exause leaks that i have, a possible stock replacment cat, would that cause the muffler to not sound like a flowmaster?

well, since 75% of the "Flowmaster tone" is actual resonation within the case. Yes a bad pipe on the inlet could make it sound funny.

it's pretty easy to distinguish a Flowmaster from most other mufflers. the Flowmaster will have all welded seams. i'd just look at a few pics of them on ebay and see if they look the same.

the cat shouldn't take away from the actual tone, a high-flow will be slightly louder but not by much.

thats a flow, I cant imagine that its not loud, the white stuff looks like crappy exhaust leak fixer of some sort. You should replace that intermediate pipe if its leaking, it will sound a lot better and you wont die from CM poisoning.

someone told me that there are 2 flows that fit on our cars. 1 is quiet (not sure of the series) and 1 is loud which is an 80 series. Sounds like a 40 series. I looked on flowmasters website but i could only find the 80 series and the hush power 2's (which look sweet).

Are there 2, or just the 80 series that fits on our cars?

BY THE WAY, i want to know the idiot tech who tried to fix that leak. THose pipes are obviously rusted bad enough to where they need to be replaced. THere are a few holes eaten through it. ANy exuast tech i have talked to, wont re weld on a pipe that is rusted that bad. They even welded the stock tips back on and they have holes in them!! Man i hate when people go cheap on their cars!

Sorry, just venting

the 80 is supposedly the most agressive sounding one they have (or used to have). that's what i have and i'm not impressed. i'm gonna try to find a set of 40's to put back there. if i don't end up puttin on my long tubes with side pipes....

40 series will have one outlet, 80 series will have dual outlets.

You gotta also give Flowmasters a while to break in.

now, i've heard this for years and it dosen't make sence....

there is nothing inside a Flowmaster that would change over time, unless the carbon buildup on the V causes a difference in tone. i can see in other mufflers, the exhaust carbon clogging up the pores in the fiberglass and making the muffler louder but not on a Flowmaster which is pure metal........

Anyone care to shed some light on this?

It probably is the buildup. I know a few guys with Flowmaster that it happened to, one in particular. It seems to me the more you drive them the nicer they get.

I heard from the constant heating and cooling over time from running the car and turning it off, the baffles in the muffler eventually warp creating a louder sound. Especially if they start turning down. This is just what I heard, no proof...

I've heard that one too. Don't know if I quite believe it though.

Anyone ever cut one apart to find out what is going on inside? The only thing I can think of that will make them sound different over time is carbon build up. Works like a sound deadener on the outside of the case so it stops the tin can effect and gives it a more mellow tone. Thats my only logical idea.

I used to have a flow master on the car and damn that thing was loud on just my v6. Not sure what it was because I bought the car with it and the muffler is still in my driveway. It was too damn loud after 2500 rpm. Get a hooker aero flow, much better sound.
