cat question

i recently went to my local exhaust shop and had my 89 RS made into duals with no muffler. it sounds ok, but i would like it to be a little louder. i was looking at gettting high flow converter, then got to thinking, do i want to just put a high-flow converter on, or put a muffler like a flow master american thunder were the cat is. i dont no how either would sound. i would appreciate some feed back. thanks guys

cats with no mufflers sound kind of strange. cats do kill a lot of sound but if you have to have one for emmissions then of course a high flow is better especially since they are so cheap. (E-bay $50-70 or less) If you dont need cats switch to mufflers like some of those straight through bullet style mufflers. duals with no cats or mufflers are way to loud for the street IMO but a good dual system with good free flowing mufflers will sound loud without sounding cheap.
some mufflers are about the same size as cats so you could flange them and just put the cats on when you get a smog check.
hope that helps

The highflow cats will make it sound a bit louder and throatier.

personally i hate cats but since you live in the states i am guessing you need one. i would go high flow cat to a race bullet style muffler those suckers are loud and beefy soundin. also how much did ya pay for them to make a true dual set up

i am in a non emissions area of the states, rural illinois, i dont like the idea of a cat either, i just want a nice, deep, V-8 sound. i have no mufflers now, just the cat, and i think the cat is going, its starting to smell. i didnt get a true dual set up. what they did was cut into the pipe were it comes over the rear axle, and run straight out there, and run a straight pipe over to the driver side and put a tail pipe on. it looks good and sounds good, i just want it to sound a little louder. i thought that a bullet muffler inplace of the cat would be louder, but somebody said a hi flow cat would better. what do u think?

like i said as long as i have been driving i have had 4 cars now and i have removed the cat on every one except my maro altho that is coming next week. but in my opinion a cat is just another thing that restricts flow thus making it quieter. now if you were to stick a bullet there it might not be too loud due to it would still have the majority of the exhuast system to go through. i guess we will not know until you try it.

Catco (cheaper) and Random Technology (expensive).

My friend had the 3" Catco put on, it sounded nice.

Randoms are the 'best' out there, but I don't think they are worth the price unless you are pushing for some good power. Catco and PFP both make some good free-flowing ones for the money.

Carsound also makes very good high flow cats that are not as expensive as Random Tech, but flow almost as well.
