starter wont fit with headers
I didn't know whether to post this here or in the general engine board since it has to do with the headers. I bought a mini starter off of ebay that is supposed to fit with longtubes. Unfortunately, it won't fit up in there right. I don't know whether I need to trim some off the crossmember so the headers can move a little bit and make it fit or what. I got the engine in and bolted up and bolted up the headers then went to put the starter on and it wouldn't fit. Any help/opinions as to what might be wrong would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam

Any pictures? What headers are you using? I didn't have any problem with my 383 in my 91 Formula with SLP Tri-Y headers and a mini-starter from Summit.

I am using Hedman 1 5/8" longtube headers, and the starter is a PMGR pm300 mini starter that I bought from dbelectrical on ebay following the recommendation of riley's35089rs+. I am going to go try to put it up in there myself either tonight or tomorrow night to see if I can get it to fit. Sorry I don't have any pictures......don't have a digital camera.

I would think the mini starter should just slide right in. I have the hedmans LT's and I used the stock starter without any problems.

Not but since you should be using the same size flywheel the starter should fit in the same location. Ynles you are using the big flywheel.

I don't know personally about with the larger flywheel, but I found the mini-starter a direct-fit. Much more room around the headers, less weight, and no real disadvantages other than the initial cost of purchase. Some people I've spoken to with 400SBC's haven't mentioned anything about this though.
I had to re-clock my ministarter to get it to clear w/ the 168 flywheel. Not sure about the one you have, but most aftermarket mini-starters have like 3-4 holes which allow you to rotate the motor/solenoid assembly on the mount bracket. - i had to turn 2 holes (solenoid straight up when mounted) to clear the LT's and the big flywheel.
