EGR valve

my car i making a funny puffing noise and i have had people tell me that there are two possible reasons 1st is that there is an exhaust leak where the manifold bolts to the y pipe. went to the auto shop at my college put it on the hoise and the teacher and i looked it over no leaks that we can find. the 2nd reason was that the EGR valve is bad. i agree with this one cause the engine does not make the noise until it slows down to idle after starting and then it will almost die. i just wanted to get some more suggestions before i go and spend $40+ dollars on the part.

Check your spark plugs, one may be loose/damaged and creating a leak. I had that happen with a lawnmower once

Well, considering the almost die part, which can be associated with a vacuum leak and considering the fact that EGR uses vacuum to operate, I think the 2 can be put together.

Any codes?

i tried to flash the codes but it didn't work. is there a difference in shape between the 12 pin DLC and a non12 pin DLc or is it just a difference in the number of pins in the connector? i have the plastic connector but it only has pins in these locations

On my old 87 I had a split on the top of the pipe just before my cat. It had that same puffing sound you're talking about. Just look across the whole exhaust system and make sure there are not leaks...
