3.4 Motor...modded...need new catback...Size?...Stock too restrictive per dyno run...
Ok got annoyed with the search button...bunch of what sounds best on v-6s. Then the v-8 guys saying why bother to the V-6ers...if my answer was there i could not find it for all the BS.
So I will ask my question that I could find nothing on when I searched. Nor could I get any help from the 3.4 guys...
Ok what I got. I have a 2.25 in NON mandrel bent catback made by a local shop 10 years ago. Then I added a flowmaster and a 2.5 in cat...better...Good for the stock 2.8 engine.
Then I ported the heads, intake, Larger fuel injectors, under drive pulleys, CAI (ram air hood and box), & Big cam (whose overlap meant 18-19 degrees of timing on reg unleaded with no ping) Some more I'm sure I left out....
Added the 3.4 & installed PF&E headers...on the dyno the cars HP is low for a 3.4 torque is good. The hp numbers have to do with reusing the 2.8 ported top end, I'm sure...Its needs more. Also the fuel pump is still the 2.8 stocker.
Ok we then added a cut out. Then I got a hp jump...so we talk to the dyno guy. Says the size jump, on this car with its power range, is quite uncommon on cars with a good exhaust sys. So its obvious, mine is too restrictive.
So I researched the 3.4 exhaust options. Most have the stock 2.5 in sys replaced with a factory 2.75in TA or Z28 cast off from SLP or GMMG... This works perfect for a STOCK 3.4 and is not too big...none of them say they have any popping with this set up...
Now mine is far from stock....
So with the cut out I have NO popping, except at 80 + if I'm on it full and then let off full. Otherwise it never pops...
So here is what I'm planning mod wise in the next little bit...Larger fuel pump (have the adj regulator to tone it back), extrude honing the plenum and runners, full valve job, reporting the heads further, flat valves instead of the dished boys, milling the heads for still better compression, roller rockers, speed density swap so I can go to the GM turbo computer (cyclone) that dyno shops actually have some experience with, so a chip does not cost a bloody fortune....
So with all this in mind...do you think I can take the car to a 3in mandrel bent catback...w/o a lose in backpressure...and if so which system...
The car will probably see a turbo not long after!
And yes its a V-6 and money would be better spent on a V-8, but I want to play with this v-6 and see what happens. The 82 will be the LT1 383 & the Dually & Scout the 500 ci cadillac big block...

i ran a 14.54 with my modded 305 and a horrible y-pipe into a 2.5" dynomax system. i know that i was way overpowered for the system hence my new dual exhaust and lt headers. but i would think that it would support your v6 fine...

Actual dyno results with the cut out from my site...
DYNOLAB:, GA. (Jan. 3, 2004)
This was after installing the new headers…still working out bugs on the engine, like fuel and timing…still no custom chip!
Max Power = 125.9 @ rear wheels (+20%) = 151.08hp @ the fly wheel
Max Torque = 203.1 @ rear wheels (+20%) = 243.72ft-lbs @ the fly wheel
So I got some HP#s, but lost some torque, arrgh….
DYNOLAB:, GA. (Jan. 3, 2004)
Now we opened the newly installed cutout to see what would happen….
Max Power = 134.1 @ rear wheels (+20%) = 160.92hp @ the fly wheel
Max Torque = 207.4 @ rear wheels (+20%) = 248.88ft-lbs @ the fly wheel
The hp#s… cutout gave: 8.2hp
Got some of the torque back… cutout gave: 4.3ft-lbs
