new exaust for 36 bucks
i just put the exaust on my car for 36 dollars, and about an hour worth of work. i was running open headers, so it was very loud. i went to autozone and bought some 3" to 2 1/2" header collectors, 2- 16 inch pieces of 2 1/2" pipe, and two 2 1/2" turn downs. it quietened it down ALOT. just thought i would share. nothing custom, but it gets the job done.

there's plenty of room for mufflers. i have true duals and used mufflers. can you street drive this and not get pulled over? i sure know i couldn't without some type of mufflers.

the pipes scrub now when i load it onto the trailer. if i put mufflers on it, it would be even lower. my car isnt a street car anyway. its a racecar. adding the pipes was for making it quieter inside the car.

If its a "race-car" why drop it from 3" to 2 1/2" anyways? Who cares about noise if its only for 10-14 seconds at a time? Wear some earplugs..
On a side note, my buddy and I made up an entire cat-back exhaust out of autozone piping the other day. They were getting pissed at us (the girl was a true b*tch) because we were there piecing our exhaust together on their floor 5min before they were closing. She was like literally kicking us out of there.
Who would kick out 2 guys buying about $25 worth of exhaust tubing? lol..

Oh, and I also realized she knew nothing when I called back at a later time to ask about the water pump on my car.
Yeah, I was supposed to help my buddy do the damn project (we were at first going to attempt to put my old 2 3/4" cat-back on his '92 Nissan NX2000), and I ended up doing ALL of it except for cutting ONE pipe. Yeah, that made the girlfriend happy when I was at his house 2 hours later (not to mention she and him don't get along very well...bad past, etc.)
Anyways, his car has some bad exhaust leaks (after all everything was done with just pipe clamps and we had no gasket at the cat because of how we had to rig it up). One thing he did learn that night is that his car had the stock 2" exhaust except for headers and the muffler, when the guy told him he had put a 2 1/4" cat-back on it as well as a few other things I showed him that weren't what he was told

Have you run it since this mod to be able to compare performance differences?

We're talking long tube headers here.
The typical assumption is if you uncork the headers at the collector, you'll go faster. The truth is, the typical header collector is too short for maximum performance, particularly low RPM torque. Therefore, adding an extension pipe to the collector can produce better overall performance.
With proper mufflers, it is possible for a "corked" system to outperform headers open at the collector.
Dyno pulls are rarely run with open collectors. There are other reasons for that, but it also gives you different results than you would get with open collectors.

i read it in hot rod
hot rod magazine says that adding an 8 to 10 inch length of collector size pipe is a great idea for adding low range torque WITHOUT affecting top end horsies. i Suppose this would make sense with or without the rest of the exhaust system. besides think about it air comin straight from the collector is bouncin around like a mf, adin a little more pipe to smooth the flow out would make sense. as for going to 2.5 from 3 I doubt any loss in horsepower would be noticed because of the gain in torque from the collector extension especially on a street car where low rpm torque is more necessary. dual 3's is really too big anyways unless youve got torque to spare. which my 350 tpi doesn't. 2.5s on the headers is probably the best idea. and for 36 bucks who cares about anything else. rich boys with your fancy mufflers hah!!!

p.s.
it is commonly known that a 2.5 system will give you good torque vs 3s and most of the magazines as well as manufacturers sell/promote these 2.5 systems because it is best for street cars hot rod also says that going with overly large headers or exhaust is silly.
