headers with single exhaust

Dual exhaust seems like too much trouble for me. I have a 305 with very minor mods.
I have a set of hookers and I want to take the easy way out by running just a y-pipe and 3" single exhaust.

The guy at the muffler shop says Im wasting my time as far as performance goes. His exact words were "Headers with a single exhaust?" "Whats the point?"

I told him the point was better flow, he looked at me like I was adding a turbo to a supercharger.

What could I expect (performance/sound)by going with a single 3" with headers versus stock.

Thanks to those that reply to my dumbass.:hail:

I'd find a new shop. The change in sound will largely depend on the muffler you put on there. By putting on a full exhaust you'll have an exhuast that actually flows as opposed to the stopped up stock system.

That is why he works in a muffler shop and not in a speed shop. Headers and a sinlge 3" pipe can support up to 350 to 400 hp at the wheels. There are plenty of LT1 and LS1 cars doing this everyday.

i used to work at speedtek performance in dallas, we had a shop car,a 2000 ls1 z28. the owner decided(?) to put a single 3 in system on the car......it made 670hp and 800tq to the wheels it was a stock bottom end with heads and cam and a 300hp shot.amazingly thatshort block made about
30 dyno pulls and 35 passes before it let go. the secret was ls1's have a very tight ring gap, once you get so much cylinder pressure, i just butts the ring togather and wha-lah yanks the top of the ring land off.we argued with himm forever on a 3in system on a 3700lbs 670hp car but he wouldnt budge . it made almost the same power on the dyno, but lost 3 tenths at the track.

3" catback will be plenty of flow for you, esp if it is mandrel bent pipe.

Update: 3" on the way
AIR gone, Smog pump gone and cat gone. Looks like Ill need a new serp. belt.

Headers, y-pipe then straight to the muffler. Am I going to be able to hear the radio?

Decided to go with Hooker Aerochamber muffler. Now I have a complete Hooker exhaust (-custom y-pipe).

Cant wait to get it back, everyone is asking what I did with the car. Custom chip goes in next.
