Doing it myself vs. the shop...
Hey gang,
I'm going to finally do the exhaust on the Z28. The Vette' was hit the day before Thanksgiving and it's getting repaired. It's going up for the winter soon anyway so I won't be able to drive it.
I have a concern with the installation of the exhaust on the Z28. Right now, there is nothing after the cat. It was rusted through so I sawed off the exhaust from the cat all the way to dropping the mufflers off. Incidentally, instead of having one muffler, mine had 2 little ones.
I'm concerned that I won't be able to install the exhaust system because I don't have access to a lift. More specifically, getting the exhaust pipe over the axle. I just cut the old one off so that wasn't a problem. I did the Vette' exhaust myself but that's just a y-pipe connected to 2 mufflers.
I don't want to bring it in to a shop because of the labor costs.
Is it feasible to do this by myself at home with just jackstands?

If you plan on getting a cat back, then you'll be fine. I did my exhuast when I was 16 years old (two years ago) with only the rear end up enough to get the over-the-axle pipe to fit in. It took me all of 3 hours to get it completely torn apart and put back together, and even for a 30 minute interval of rain. You might have to weld the I-pipe to the cat, but just get everything bolted up loosely, then weld the I-pipe and tighten it all down and you should be fine. Common hand tools, jacks stands, patience, and maybe a welder and you're on your way.
