Big Block Swap exhaust questions
I'm putting a .100 over 427 backed by a Richmond Super T10 into a 1989 RS. I don't like the Hooker swap headers, because, as I understand, the collectors exit at an angle toward the side of the car. Not good for running dual 3"(w/ cats) into a custom 2x3"-4" y-pipe and connecting to a Mufflex 4 inch dual (3") exit system. My thoughts were to get a set of Hooker street rod headers for BBC, cut the collector rings off, and expand the collectors to 3". They look like the might fit, but I was wondering if anyones ever done this before. Thanks.

2180's?
I'd be concerned about them clearing the motor mounts and chassis. But, I don't recall them being discuused before, and have no first-hand knowledge, so can't say anything beyond that.

Yep, 2180's. It says that they'll clear the standard side mount motor mounts, and with a tubular K-member, they should(should being the key word) fit. I guess it'll be a little further down the line, but I'll give them a shot. Go ahead and shoot more opinions, I'm open to anything.

Well, I am pretty sure that you probably want to run a long tube header?? but I do remeber reading a post or two about somebody who dropped in a big block and had header fitment issues. I think that that person(can't remember the name) ended up using the manifolds from an 8.0L?? big block vortec motor from a Suburban/Tahoe/Escalade or something and they fit. And they are a tubular manifold so they are kinda like a header. Not sure if it wil work for you though, but I figured that I would throw it out there.

Primary length is right around 20". They aren't a shorty, but aren't a long tube. Kind of a 'mid-tube', if you will. Bassani seems to have acceptable results on the Modular Ford's with their mid-lengths, giving near long tube power levels w/ out long tube fitment problems. Plus the cost of a set of 2180's is around half that of the swap headers. I'll research some more and see what i find.

The 2180's have begun to bring questions to mind. Like was stated, how is the fit? Would expanding the collector weaken it?
So, a better alternative looks to be Sanderson BB3's. Those into custom head pipes, 3'' in/ 4'' out y pipe, Random Technology 4'' converter, and then the Mufflex 4" system.
BTW, how does the Mufflex sound with the Spintech and dual exits? Thanks in advance for the info.

.100 0ver 427 w a t-10 4 speed..... outta be fun rowing thru the gears!
As for the headers, the collectors on the swaps aim toward the rear of the car right behind the front tires, I fabbed a dual 3" system, which was fairly simple. I wondered the same thing when I was doing the swap but I wanted to go for "the sure thing" well, after using the swap headers I`d say go for it, it could`nt be any harder than making these piles of **** work

when i drop my 496 in i plan on using Sanderson's big block headers. there website says they will clear so i think when i get there ill find out how well they fit. i think the part number was BB2 .
hey greezemonkey how well did that profab xmember bolt in? is there any issues with the steering linkage or no? just woundering from what ive seen from other problems on here with the aftermarket xmembers.

I ususally like Hooker, but those headers look like Medusa had a bad hair day, aka, Major Bundle 'o Snakes. I think it'll definately be the Sandersons.

I might run the Hooker's after all. The increased primary length of the swap headers will help the low end torque with the big cam(268*@.050, solid) on this weekend cruiser.

The steering linkage, namely the inner tie rod on the passengers side does come close to the main tube as it goes thru it`s travel. Apparently, the K member (profab/PA) was designed off a 84 camaro which used a 1st design idler, which was shoreter by 1/4- 1/2 inch than the 85-up ones, I checked on it and there was a 1st design which was superseeded by the 2nd design, as far as the length being different I am not sure but it sounds reasonable, I guess. I am having no problems with my steering and I am happy with the k member for the price
