Hey im sure this has been asked before, but what would you need to gut out your cats and how would you do it? Also, is there anywehre you can take your car to have your converters removed, and straight pipes put in place? most wont do it.

When I gutted mine it was pretty simple. All I did was cut the cat off and grabbed a large prybar. From there proceeded to beat the crap out of the insides. Eventually it all came out. After that point, I cut the pipes out of the shell just beyond the welds. Now if you have air tubes, you will need to bend the air tube inside. From there stuff a 2.25 or 2.5 inch pipe through the middle of it. Last you weld the shell to the pipe inside. At that point once it's on the car they will never be able to tell it's a gutted cat.
Some places will do it, you just have to word it differently. They can put in what's called a "test pipe" for you. Basically they will have a pipe that goes in with flanges on it. Plus they will do it for your cat also. Too much of a pain if you ask me. Just gut the cats and make sure it runs good and your in the clear.

All I used to gut my cat was a nice long snap-on prybar. I just dropped the y-pipe and pulled it out from under the car. Then you just use the prybar or any other long chisel and maybe a hammer to help break up the stuff and then just dump it out. I also blew compressed air through from the manifold ends of the y-pipe to blow the small pieces out. This method worked on my cat because you can separate it from the intermediate pipe by undoing the two bolts and the clamp, then you can get to the "brick" inside the cat from the back end of it. The brick inside mine was breaking apart anyways and causing a really annoying rattle when the car was idling. I figured I might as well gut it and have better flow!
If yours is welded on both ends or rusted together, you'll probably have to cut the pipe and then find someone willing to weld it back up for you when you're done gutting it. If you go to a few of the mom and pop, small time shops, you can usually find someone willing to weld it back up for a few bucks on the side. I also know a lot of guys who do it the way CraZ-28 did by shoving a pipe through the middle after gutting it. This will give you a cleaner, smoother sound. Mine sounds like it has a big resonator chamber now, but it doesn't bother me. Besides, the guy who does my inspections is a good friend and wouldn't care if the cat is gutted anyways!

Hey thanks for the info guys.
So if i just straight up gut the cats, how much does that really effect the sound, i mean is it nasty like a hole in the muffler or is it just louder?
cuz i know it will make it louder, i just dont want a nasty sound, cuz ill just fork over some extra $$ and buy some high flo. we dont have to have inspections in this county so im good either way

The best way to do it is to split the cat down the middle, and then weld the cat shell around a pipe the same diameter as your exhaust. That way you don't add a bunch of turbulence and kill your velocity in the process.
Your exhaust may be a tiny bit louder, and have some more rasp to it.
If you are concerned about sound, just leave it in there. If you have the money, buy a high flow cat. You will not notice a difference at all between a high flow cat and no cat.

I agree with this guy. You're just asking for leaks, turbulence, and ghettoness if you gut a cat. If you must just put the case around a straight pipe.

I straight piped my cat, but I didn't cut it open because I can't weld yet. So I gutted it and managed to shove a 3" pipe through it
