Will any header do?

Will a header that fits an 86+ TPI engine fit an 83 TBI 305? i'm looking at these ones right here because they are the cheapest but i don't know if they'll fit. some input on which ones are best and which ones work is appreciated.

Any header tailored for a 3rd gen V8 will fit. That means TPI, TBI, Carb, ect ect. They are all gen I small blocks and have the same external geometry. TPI headers are prefered on TBI applications as well due to the larger y-pipe size.

oh thanks, i didn't know if the bolt holes or anything were different. now does anyone know where to get the pipes? i find flowmaster and hooker and dynomax to be very unhelpful.

Shop around on Jegs, Summit and thunder racing. All of them should show you the cat-back and header kits avaiable for our car. I would look into the Hooker 2055's, 3" high flow cat, and the cat back of your choice. Buy the kits tailored for TPI applications. A few searches should help you choose which ones are best.

Just to be clear, the headers you attempted to link will not fit.

I'll 2nd the 2055 recommendation. As for a cat, get a direct-fit for '86-'90 TPI application, not a universal 3". I'm still paying for that mistake.

Did you really mean "83 TBI 305"? Crossfire, perhaps? Or, a different year ('88-later)? Regardless, the parts Shifty recommended will fit.

yeah, sorry, i meant cross-fire, but i don't want it to run underneath the seat pans, i want to have 2 3" pipes running side by side till it gets to the end, where it'll split off in the rear. i looked and i should have just enough room for it, if not 2 1/2" will do. I was looking at the 2055 hooker has, but i don't want to spend my whole wallet. right now i suppose i'm willing to spend 250-350. but thanks so far. one last thing, on the catbacks made for a TPI, how well do those fit on the stock single exhaust camaros? (yes sadly, my car is a single exhaust made to look like a dual )

My car is a tbi V8. The exhaust is originally a single pipe, runs under the passenger side and over the rear axle. Exactly like yours I belive.
I wasn't ready for the 3' cat so I got the tbi 3' edelbrock exhaust. the only difference between that and the tpi version is the 16' that joins to the cat tapers back down to fit the cat. where as in the tpi it's 3' all the way to the cat.
In retrospect I would of got the 305/350 tpi 3' exhaust. Just to save on welding in new peices.
The majority of people here rec' hooker 2055's...so either trust in them and fork out or go your own way.
Also theres flowdoesn'tmatter availble on EBAY for approx $200 but I'm opting for hookers/edelbrocks because I want easy fitment.

(my ypipe just got crushed torn and bent on a rock, along with my rusty soda can of a cat)

Thanks, this helps a lot, but now i found a place in my town that does custom exhaust systems, i guess they aren't too bad a price either. So i think i'm going to have them do it, and i think the cat converter is going to cost more then the exhaust...

Don't pay to much for a direct fit cat. You can get a universal 3" cat off of ebay and have a shop fit it in all together for around 100 bucks (give or take 25). I woul dnot waste your money on a "custom" cat-back or y-pipe set-up when anything you buy tailored to our cars will be better. You only need to go custom when your set-up goes beyond what a 3" off the shelf system can provide.

If you have a 502, you might be able to justify dual 3" exhaust.

A single 3" will do just fine for your setup.

A direct-fit Catco 9118 is $116.99 from Summit. If you order the headers and cat at the same time, no extra order fee.

$116.99 is a lot less than what you'll have to pay for a universal 3" cat and having a shop install it.

Get a direct fit. Save money.

Here, i found a dual exhaust kit specially made for 82-89 camaro/birds. 134 dollars, not a back price, doesn't inclue the muffler though...

summit racing

if no one objects i think i'm going to buy it

Wow that is great to know. Thanks for the correction. When I bought my Catco cat about 3 years ago the price was much higher for the Direct fit cat. I remember it being $240 or so. I take it the price came down? Or do they offer more than one direct fit? I ended up with the universal Catco one for about $150 I think.
