catalytic problems

my cars stalls when i put it into reverse or drive when the rpm is under 1000, i was told my converter is clogged, i drilled holes in my converter, and it helped out alittle bit but still stalls sometimes, should i just get a new converter, or is it a bigger problem

Take the converter off and see if it runs properly. If it does then that's the solution and you should get a new converter.

I read a lot of articles saying if your converter goes bad, there is most likely another problem (like running extremely rich). Supposedly, converters should never go bad on a good running/tuned motor.

theres also alot of white smoke comming from the exhaust, i figured its just a seal, but could it also be because of the converter, i bought my bird for $250 off a friend, he said he had no problems with it until the converter went, the engine runs nice and after i drilled the holes, i noticed an increase in power

Drilling the cat most likely broke apart the material inside the cat. Your better off buying a new cat before a big chunk of it breaks off and goes in your muffler.

would it be better to run a straight pipe, rather than have my junk converter, just until i get the money for a new converter?

Straight pipe would be a start. From there you can check the car out and see if it has any other problems.
