White smoke means water is leaking. Some gasket has gone bad.

Yup, you got a water leak, probably a head gasket. Check your oil, if it looks milky, you have coolant in the oil. Drain it out quick or you cn ruin your bearings.

get the lo3, after about 100k miles the seals on the valve stems go bad. oil leaks down into the cylender, when the car starts up you get a nice puff of blue smoke. Pretty common on the lo3, not sure about the other thirdgen engines.

This one is easy. If waters leaking into your chambers it's a blown headgasket letting water from the water jackets leak into the combusion chamber, better get that fixed quick or you can melt your plugs, burn out your o2 sensors burn out your bearings etc...

The blue puff of smoke right when the car starts up is from bad valve stem seals. (think thats what they're called) basically waht happens is when you turn your car off and let it sit for a little bit oil from the rocker arms and valves drips/seeps down the valve stem and gets into the combustion chamber. When you start your car up it burns up the oil in the chambers right away, and thats where your 'puff' of blue smoke comes from. I know its a common problem on the TBI engines, not sure about carbed or TPI motors though.

SBCs have been known for that blue-puff-of-smoke-at-start-up-due-to-valve-stem-seals-getting-hard-with-age as long as the factory has used those ineffective o-rings under the retainers with the hoods over the springs. In other words, from model year 1955-on.

As has been repeated, white smoke is water in the combustion process. Head gaskets have been mentioned, cracked heads will also do this.

The puff of blue smoke is more commonly referred to as the chevy salute
