To muffler or not to muffler...

This may be a stupid question, but I'm thinking about redoing my exhaust, replacing everything with 2 1/2" or 3" pipe from the y-pipe back and removing the muffler. This might be a stupid idea, without the muffler and all. Anyone ever do that? I'm mostly looking for a mean sound out of it. Thank you

Oh, also, I have a 305, with manifolds (and also again, stay with manifolds or go to headers?). Thank you!

It will have a "Plumbing" sound to it and it will be obnoxiously loud. Headers will give you a better sound as well as more power.

I have the stock exhaust with no muffler and just recently gutted the cat, and it's not as loud as I thought it would be. I have yet to drive it, so I'm anxious to hear how 'mean' it sounds.
I'm also debating on whether to get headers (more like when, not if) and from what I've read on here, most people are for replacing the manifolds.

if you do straight pipes it's going to be very very very loud, your neighbors will hate you. I have headers on mine and I do like the sound of open headers at the track so I did a true dual setup with 2.5" cut-outs so that I can open them up when racing. If you're doing your own work, then check it out, mess around with it, see how loud it feels for ya...

I live out in the country, but I have still managed to get pulled over for sound.... Not having a muffler does help power, though people will think you have something more than a 305, well except for those that really know what to listen for.

My suggestion is to just go with a cutout. Then you can have the best of both worlds. definetely go with headers as well, the stock manifolds are robbing a lot of power.

Is changing the muffler on my current system able to affect the sound very much? I should I change everything?

i have no cat with a strait pipe on the orignal exhaust and the exhaust has curroded so now i am running straight and u can hear it from far away. it has a lobe at idle but never have had a cop stop me. i have been running it like this for almost a year. sounds healthy but annoying at times.

WOW. Now that is some awsome grammar. Holy cow, I think my daughter who is 3 could pick out the problems with this sentence.

i ran around like that for a summer, i thought it was cool too but..............then i got pulled over in a back ally. and got questioned by the cop about emissions and the nosie level. he gave me a warning so i desided to go get a real system. and after the dynomax i got it was quite and my town was happy agian. I didn't like the dynomax. so i got the flowmaster 80's and its 90000000 times better than both dynomax and stright headers. its deeper and not annoying high pitch loud sound. i highly recomend it plus a 800 dollar ticket is not cool either.(he let me off).

p.s. dont half @$$ your car do it right. and get flowmaster or magnaflow. plus if you run just manifolds or headers its bad on vales the motor needs some back pressure.

Back pressure is not needed.
I run an open exhaust for about 10 years now, and at low rpm's the car is just quiet, at higher rpm's it's eh....not so quiet...!
My engine is a 350 though, and the cat is still there, and no headers.

Then you do have back pressure.

here is my 355 with headers and a single 3" system with no muffler...

http://whitelightning2.kicks-***.org...20exhaust1.wma

http://whitelightning2.kicks-***.org...0at%20idle.wma

and here is the same setup with a Flowmaster 80 series..

http://whitelightning2.kicks-***.org...0and%20rev.wma

mine was extreemely loud with no muffler, with the 80 series it's atleast 40% quieter and has a completely different tone..

I'm not going to go into just how wrong that statement is, only because it has already been said in so many other threads.
Regardless to say, the simple solution to the whole dilema is a cutout pre-cat. Run open when at the track or when you know you're gonna race. Cutouts are inexpensive and an effective way to open your exhaust, what more do you guys need???

I talked to few exaust shops and they all told me that back preassure with a v8 is not a problem if you get rid of mufflers. They all said muffler is 99percent for noise reduction. Cat has plenty of backpreassure for your car (most of back preassure as well).

Talked to three shops about it, and they all said that if you want to cut it off and straight it, it would be fine. However, if you dont want it to be too loud, just cut out a piece of the pipe to where some of it is going into mufffler and some of it before the muffler. I did it just for sound, and it sounds great. Its deep and the mufflers are still there. For emmissions just patch up the hole with that tape, and take it off when its done!! .

Emissions dont look for mufflers (unless its a **** one!)
