Is it possible to run 3 inch pipes from the headers back with dual mufflers? I have been curious about this for a while, but no one around here knows.

 

I'm sure its possible. My favorite dual set up so far was with oval pipes. I think they were 4 inches across the widest point, but i could be wrong on that.

It is not that it is impossoble per se, but it is the compromises that are made to run this type of set-up. Running duals of any size drastically reducer ground clearance which is small to begin with on these cars. You also have the increase weight of all that piping. Fit and fab work cabn be costly if you do not have the means to do it correctly. A dual 3" set-up can support astronomical power levels typically seen on all out drag cars where ground clearance isn't a concern. If you don't make more than 600hp I would not even think about it.

 

My duals increased my gound clearence my single 3" hanged lower.

 

What if you went lower? Like 2.5s or so? And what about dual mufflers. I see no point in dual pipes and a single muffler. Mine has about a 3.5 single on it now and it isn't low. Not sure as to the size, it was on it when I got it.

That looks good. Is there any arrangement that allows for more clearance? A different shape pipe or something? And what he said, what are those mufflers? I bet that sounds awesome.

 

They are Glass pack type mufflers but have ceramic packing instead made by Dynomax (AKA Dynomax Bullets). They sound great they are very deep sounding not raspy at all and when you let off the throttle no popping and crackling like glass packs. As far as better clearance my exhaust doesn’t hang any lower than stock exhaust so I could drop my car if I wanted with no problems what so ever. If you’re doing it yourself take your time! It took a shop 5hr and 3 people to install mine I have full inch of clearance around the rear end and heat shield. There were no mods made to the car to fit 2 pipes they did however add like 3 extra hangers so the exhaust does not move or rattle. If you decide to go with flat oval pipes I can imagine they would crimp if you tried to rout them over the axle. You might want to try combinations of flat oval pipe and round pipe like for under the car use flat oval pipe then when you go over the axle convert it to round pipe. Just some ideas for thought.

I like it alot. I don't know if I will do it or keep the stock. If there will be a noticible power increase, I will. Is there? I like the stainless.

 

Ive got 2.5" Tru duals with headers on mine.... ground clearance isnt a issue if i go over speed bumps at a angle....I do need some extra hangers i will get some pix for you tommrow when the daylight is out..

 

One thing I would like to say to help you in your decision. If you don’t like being loud do not go this rout. I wake my neighbors all the time and I have cats! I could only imagine how loud it would be without them. If you don’t mind hearing your car while your driving or if you don’t mind having to talk kind of loud to your passengers then go for it. Dual 2 1/2 is sufficient flow for up to 400hp with out being restrictive as Dynomax flow sheet shows. But I have seen some single 3" cars running 12's and 11's that’s got to be around 400-500hp but it says that single 3" becomes restrictive at 300-350. It really just comes down to what you like its all about the sound unless your pushing some massive power then I can see where exhaust really comes into play. Also if you cannot weld and you have a shop to do it prepare to lighten your wallet! I paid about 260 in parts but then another 260 for the install. The reason I went with duals is because I heard this LS1 that sound freaking awesome and I wanted my car to sound like this some day.

I don't mind the sound, as long as it isn't REALLY loud. I would like to find a way to make it sound like my Uncle's LT-4 Corvette. Nice, quiet tone idling and cruising..... but FREAKING GREAT when under acceleration. That would depend on the mufflers, I think. Is there any way to fit a more conventional muffler under the car than what you did? I know about the cost. A local shop ran the complete, manifold back 2.5" duals on my buddy's truck for $275 including parts and it sounds good. Not the sound I am going for, but close. A bit too chugy for my tasted.
I know that a Camaro woul be more labor and therefore more money, but I think it would be reasonable.

where do you get that oval pipe from? i'm gonna be running dumps, and i hear you can save a lot of ground clearance with oval tube...

 

alright that movie is rediculously awesome..you got any more info on that car? that sounds awesome, i want mine to sound just like that...how come it says LT's/dual2.5/3.5bullets or something like that, does he have duals into a single pipe or what? i wanna see some more pics of that exhaust and see what he has...

 

All I know is It's a 2000 SS with SLP LT's 2 1/2" duals with 3 1/2" Dynomax Bullets Dumped before the axle. I can try to see if I can find more info on the car.

EDIT: K I think I have found the car. I found this info on the Atlanta F-Body Forum his profile describes the car to a T as far as looks so I'm pretty sure its the same car.

Mine is 2 1/4 inch pipe with stock manifolds and 2 mini cats. I know that clearance on driver's side at the axle is tight. It may be possible. Would be awsome with 4 inch duals!

 

That would be massive for any car. My uncle's Vette has twin cats and three mufflers..... or mabye two mufflers and triple cats. Not sure, only saw it once.....
