Blew Cat. Now car runs like crap!
I have a duel cat car. It has a flowmaster with a cutout. Ive been running with the cutout open because the muffler has something loose inside it that rattles if the exhaust goes through it. Yesterday the drivers side cat started clanging and rattling really bad. It finally quit doing that and im assuming it blew the crap out of it. Now, besides being really loud and annoying like a truck, the car has absolutely no power if i give it any gas at any rpms. it will idle find and cruise fine, but will fall on its face if i give it more than half the pedal. Is this because one cat is open and the other isnt? Is it going to harm the engine? What should i do with the exhaust system since i aparently have to replace at least 1 cat and the muffler. Im on a tight budget.

i have a single cat car and i ironicaly also had a bad cat (rotted out badly) and a rattling muffler. being a broke college student i just had a shop replace the cat with a pipe and put a hooker muffler w/ new tips. cost me $200. if you have the equipment however you could save a ton of money and do the same yourself

just having the cat itself without it's insides shouldn't cause a problem
what prolly happened is when your cat blew the chunks it blow it into your whoremasters (no offence just everyone has them hence the ***** name)
the whoremasters being a chambered design doubtfull would let any decent sized chuncks go through and instead will hold them in the muffler creating a good blockage
a very good blockage in them
should it hurt the motor? well if my theory is right your creating quite a bit of backpressure which is going to help out with exhuast temps making them go up high
as far as one working cat and one not working cat dont think that byitself is going to harm anything just might make the computer a little confused
as far as what to do for now
if you don't have emissions remove both cats and replace with straight pipe. with the muffler see if maybe you can take it off and shake the crap out of it if worst case just get a cheapy muffler to at least hold you off untill you can get another whoremaster or a different muffler if you like

Well, the cat started rattling again, so im assuming that the guts of the cat are just blocking up the cat. I got quoted $235 from a local shop to cut off the cats and replace everything from there back including a new flowmaster or magnaflow muffler. I think that sounds like a good deal so im probably going to do it. My question is; will it be a lot louder than before with no cats and a flowmaster? Id like a smooth sound, not rough like a truck. i always thought the flowmaster sounded subdued before with the original cats on the car.
also, will removing the cats do anything to my AIR sytem?
