Cat converter

I have removed the air system off an '85 Z28. Just wanting to know if I need to gut the cat until I take it out. I have blanked off the air tube that goes to it and I thought I read somewhere that the cat may get red hot without this air going to it although I thought that the air only helped with the emissions. Any information appreciated.

Regards

Simon

I would if I were you, if you got access to it is something that will add a deeper sound to your car. I did it to mine after replacing the mufler and I like the way the car ran.
