Exhuast idea
Exhuast idea
What do you guys think of this exhuast idea, except using the rectangular tips instead of the round ones? More of like a nascar style exhuast. I am upgrading from my shorties to long tube true dual exhuast and wanted to do something different from just running back and dumping the exhuast in front of the axle. Input, opinions?

This is a photoshopped pic I came across online. Don't think I would cut out the ground effects, but it does look pretty schweet!
That's pretty close. But I wasn't gonna cut the ground effects, was just gonna let it hand just below like in the pic I have posted. But your pic is the basic idea. Anyone else have photoshops or actual pics of this exhuast?

kidding...This idea has surfaced many times over the years (as you may be aware). It's not bad looking when it's edited (as shown by ice) but, the biggest drawback is, routing and getting mufflers (if desired) to fit w/o a sacrafice to ground clearance.
The gfx are nearly level with the rocker panels which means, if one were to want much of a notch as shown, a descent amount of cutting and filling (rockers & gfx) would be needed. Along with the fact that the LCA's are mounted to the chassis in about that exact spot where the pipes would be running. A quick peek under the car would show the potential problem of trying to actually tuck the pipes in that ares.
If you're not running huge pipe (2¼"ish), just having them just under the gfx could probably be done w/o to much clearance problems.
Keep in mind, OEM tips are offset to the same side and are made to clamp to 2¼" pipe (or slightly smaller). Aftermarket (18inchboyds, hope that's the right name, has some on his) are centered.
I can tell you this, side exhaust + loud = annoying to drive quick. You only hear half the exhaust nice and loud as well which sounds kind of crappy (friend had sides on his 72 truck when aquired.. I made new for him the next week out the rear).
Just my opinoin though...

Don't forget that the exhaust would have to cross under the fuel lines at some point to get to the driver's side. But this idea could be accomplished with the use of some oval pipe.

Great minds think alike!
That's what I've decided to do with my 87 carburated TA. Down here in South Carolina we don't have inspections. I'm either going to shoot for the small enclosure design of the SDT Edelbrock or the 40 race series that flowmaster has. I'll use 2.5" pipe. I'll have a new 80 series 3" for sale. I hate it...

.I'm not a fan of the Flowmasters either. I had it on my car forever and always wished my car sounded better.
