Is 4 inch to big????
Ok I have been set on four inch muflex exhuast for a little while and now I am starting to have second thoughts.
What I have right now
406
TPIS big mouth intake
zz9 cam
stock heads
hooker shorty headers
425 hp and 480 ftlbs of torque at the crank.
Plus I am adding a 125 shot
I am finnishing the car but future plans call for
ported 210 cc iron heads
TPIS Mini ram intake
zzx cam.
I dont want to buy exhaust twice. So is four inch to big?
Right now the stock hooker y pipe goes to 3 inch but that will be modified so both pipes meet into 4 inch at the y.

If it's a single 4" I don't think that would be a problem pending on whether your getting those extra parts or not.

The most most imporatant part of the exhaust is the headers themselfs. 4 inch (especially if duals) is plenty. You might see a slight difference by going to a smaller pipe, but you may not even feel it on the butt dyno.

I was thinking that 3.5 would be adiquite. Let me add that my y pipe is 2 1/2 pipes comeing from the header and going to y into 4 inch pipe or 3.5 depending on exhaust.

Check out this chart from Dynomax. I bought the 3 1/2 inch Mufflex system and I'm waiting to have it installed. Anyways going by the chart your engine will do best with a 4" single exhaust.

Compared to other exhaust you have heard is it loud. I really dont want loud exhaust. I want as much flow as I can get with as minimal noise.

MAN same here. I know my car is gonna be loud but I want it to be sorat take cuz I have such a crazy cam.
I guess you can allways add a 4" race muffler right after the Y pipe or something to quiet it down if need be.
When you guys say, go 4" all the way, are you talking aobut the 4" with the mufflex Y-pipe?
I am in desperate need of an exhaust. I have been on the line of making one or just buying the mufflex stuff. And going back to stock ride hight.
Sux cuz I allready have sportline in there.
Maybe I can add weight jacks...........

I will be going 4 inch all the way back. I am taking the hooker y pipe and cutting off the 3 inch pipe at the y and using 4 inch from then on.

hmmm....interesting take on the idea. If you order all the mufflex stuff that is 4" (y pipe and catback) cost around 985. ouch! There has gotta be a better way.
292.50- Y pipe with 02 bungs.
693.00- 4" catback with spintech muffler and dual 4" avalised tips.
I can weld and cut but don't really feel like starting from scratch. No one else makes anything like mufflex right?
I also don't even know if it will fit on my car. I have a spohn adj. TQ arm. UGH these pipes are giving me a head ache!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey grover.. just my .02 but install the exhaust first... when i had my I pipe off... it ran like **** there wasnt any back pressure.. now i dont know what headers u are running but i have the 2055's with the stock y-pipe and its fine with the 3 inch y-pipe trust me... plenty of c5's on the highway will tell u
... try it before u go and cut up the y-pipe i yould hate for u to do it and it not fit or come out like u would like it... ya know what i mean....

I am not going to cut it all up. I am just modifying where the two pipes meet. I am going to cut the vary end off and modify a 4 inch pipe to it. Cause it really does not make sense to have 4 inch bolt up to a 3 inch pipe cause the restriction is aready there. I know this exhaust is alittle big for me but after talking to a couple of my motor building buddies they recomend I go with the 4 inch.

yea everyone told me it was to big also and i was like screw what everybody thinks.. because u can expand with that big of an exhaust
like mabye turbos... the duramax guys have 5 inch... and i got 4 and dont need a turbo right now
tee hee... its just a good flowing exhaust with enough back pressure and u will love the sound i will see if i can get a vid of my car on here idling... mabye tomarrow

I just had the Mufflex 3.5" system installed with the Magnaflow 12909 muffler. The Magnaflow muffler is of the straight through design so will have little if any backpressure. The pleasant thing is the muffler is pretty quiet. So I get the performance without the noise.

me too.....Too bad it is not the easiest or cheapest set up to make. I am gonna make it simple (bullets) then add inserts untill it is quiet enough. (Dual 3")
Check out this article by David Vizard. Alot of questions can be answered from it.

I have the Mufflex Y pipe and single 4" exhaust on my 83 TA. No CAT. Hooker Supercomp 1 3/4" long tube headers.
Just installed a 383 in the car. Haven't got to the chassis dyno yet but planning on it soon. Motor should make ~450FWHP + 150 Shot. But who knows???
I really like the fit and the sound of the system. And it really appears to flow well. My calculations indicate it should flow better than a dual 2.5" system. We'll see.

Awsome. Let us know the results. I have a similar motor. And am still on the wall about pipes. I was about to order pipes to make a dual 3".

Go with the 4" Mufflex you will be happy you did! I know it's pricey, but you get what you pay for and the quality of work is top notch. My car sounds great and the performance is outstanding. For your set up this would be a perfect way to top it off.
