1-7/8" Hedman longtube ports...

We've discussed the Hooker 2210 port shape and measured it's dimensions to see how it will fit an AFR head. Now we are looking for some input on the Hedman 1-3/4" to 1-7/8" step headers and the Hedman 1-7/8" headers without the step. How do these ports "measure up"? Is anyone running these on a bracket car or on an "over the top" street car? We are trying to match up to a fel-pro 1406 gasket which measures 1.52" x 1.63".
Here again is a pic of the actual port

Here is a link showing the dimensions on 1 3/4" and 1 7/8" flanges.

1 3/4" flange"

1 7/8" flange:

The port opening on the 1 3/4" flange is actually a bit wider. I think 1.5" is about as wide as they can make the flange opening without going to a Stahl type pattern.

Tinkerin,

What pushrods are you using with your Jesel shaft rockers? 1.5 or 1.6 ratio? Just curious because I have a minor clearance issue at the valve cover rail on my heads and may need to use a tapered pushrod.

Thanks. -Neil

I've had some difficulty getting replacement lifters with the same pushrod cup height as my previous lifters, but hopefully, the right ones are in the mail on their way this afternoon. With my old solid roller lifters, it was necessary to use (and there are several variables) .050" long for the exhaust, and .100" long for the intake. Pushrod length is unique to each motor. It's length will be affected by the parts/ modifications made. For instance, my block has been decked, heads milled, lifter pushrod cup raised, the cam is ground on a small base circle, the valves are offset .450", and the valves themselves are .050" longer than stock. So you see, there are many factors that will dictate your specific pushrod length. The best thing to do is get an adjustable pushrod and measure one intake and one exhaust. It's quite possible that one may be longer than the other because of the way the cam is ground (different base circles for intake and exhaust).

Those headers won't fit our chassis, but those measurements give a basic idea of maximum port size using a standard flange.

Oh, and yes, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night! (just kidding)

Oh yeah, almost forgot. They are 1.6 with a .450" offset. I had to go with a cheapo tall valve cover (with baffle) and a double thick metal reinforced cork gasket (which cost more than the valve covers, unfortunately) from Fel-Pro.

Sounds like a nice motor you're building. I'm building a 13.5:1 372ci motor that should make 550+hp at 7,000rpm. I was very impressed with my Jesel SS rockers. They fit perfect and geometry was right on the money. The only issue I have is a little bit of pushrod interference if I go bigger than 5/16" near the rocker.

Just think, once they're bolted down, there should be no need for lash adjustments unless something is wearing out.
I've been using the Engine JR. computer program with alot of success. Look at the results for the one I'm attempting now. I sacrificed alot of top end horsepower for some midrange torque. Many people say my cam is too small, but I like torque more than horsepower, however, the goal was 600HP and the torque followed nicely.

All of these figures assume I can expell the exhaust efficiently.
