exhaust help needed

wondering if this will work? I am finishing my 406 install and need advice on exhaust. I have a set of 1 5/8" hedman Long tubes on there. street car with no emission testing was thinking about just running 3" tube to glasspack or bullet style mufflers going out in front of rear tires. question is is there any fitment issues here car is stock ride height. also is this going to be too loud for street use? anybody done it? also recommendations on mufflers.

Not on a 3rd gen, but on the '57. With 3" through the Bullets and 2-1/2" tails to the rear bumper, it was entirely too loud for the street. I was afraid to drive it 6 miles to & from the track, let alone daily.

so how would you run it without having to go over rear axle and still be streetable?

How much noise are you willing to tolerate? Anything that doesn't exit out the back will produce more interior noise. Quieter mufflers will reduce it, but out the rear is going to be the best.

Several people have posted pictures of duals that have the mufflers under the rear seats and dumps in front of the axle. The result will always be reduced ground clearance and increased interior noise. Longtubes will always reduce ground clearance more than shorties - our unibodies dictate that.

I've wondered about dual 2-1/2" pipes that run down the factory routing, over the axle, routed to mufflers under the quarter panels and out to the bumper. Dual 2-1/2" is sufficient for a pretty healthy 400. Someday, maybe I'll actually pursue it.
