Flowmaster 40 series for a 3rd gen?
I went up to the local Tuffy and they said that they could put 40 series Flowmasters on my 82 bird for $400 including muffler, tips, labor, and piping all the way up to where the cat was
I only thought that 80 series would fit my car if i wanted dual tips...
he showed my a diagram on the box, but that looked like a 80 series to me
Then i went down to a mom & pops place, and they quotes me $250 for labor, exhaust, tips, piping, but they didnt carry flowmaster, they carried V-Force.
Does anyone here have a V-Force Muffler or know if they are any good, because I don't know if I want to pay $150 more for flowmasters, especially if its not a 40 series
any suggestions or comments are welcome...

i have a 40 series i think it might be 80 i cant remember but i got it done for $300 including labor. if your going to spend $400 to get it done or even $250 for a muffler you dont want you should consider a catback and hang it yourself. it would be around $300 and then you put it on.

yes it is alot louder than stock and sounds really nice... but if i had it to do over again i would get a hooker catback and hang it myself. i have heard that the flowmaster mufflers dont flow very good at all.

One of my friends has a 91 RS with a single outlet 40 series. I have a 92 RS with the hooker catback. We have the exact same engine, so the comparison is pretty good.
His car is louder than all hell (and hes still got a stock cat, and stock manifolds). Yes it sounds like an old school muscle car, but i cant stress enough how insanely loud it is. It shakes you when your in the car, and has quite a bit of resosnance and drone. I personally wouldn't go with that muffler because i would imagine it would get old. 3 words to describe his exhaust would be: loud, authoritive, throaty.
My car on the other hand, is very tame. Its louder than stock, but pretty unobtrusive at the same time. Its also known that the hooker muffler flows ALOT better than any flowmaster. 3 words to describe it would be: deep, mellow, low.
Also, i believe flowmaster has 3 different versions of their 40 series muffler...so you might want to look into what version of the 40 series your getting. check their website for exactly what is what.

Here's one.... (IMO) of course the big cam doesn't hurt. I'm not sure whose car this is, but I found the vid on my computer from some time ago.

Whatever you think sounds better, is what you should get. Switching from a flowmaster to a hooker is not going to make a difference. Atleast not even close enough difference to spend more money and get the hooker.
If the flowmaster is a dual outlet, it is an 80 series.

Flowmasters flow awsome but it needs to all be 3" pipes with a hollow or no cat. Running all 3" pipes gets pricey though, especially cause you need headers that have a 3" collection other wise you bottleneck.

Hey Mack6, you said your friends RS (305) was really loud with a flowmaster....I'm guessing that he must have removed his converter because it really shuld be that load on a 305 motor, I'm guessing its a 305TBI. I have a 305TBI in my car, but with a dynoxax muffler...it has a nice tone but its not real loud...I'm wondering why your friends is so loud...

No im pretty sure the cat is still in place. I mean its just a single out 40 series muffler with no tailpipe or tip. It just dumps out the muffler. Its just loud as all hell (atleast in my opinion). Its not glasspack loud, nor does it have a glasspack sound..but its unmistakable. For example, today at track practice i was practicing relay handoffs and blockwork so i was in our stadium on the track, and i could hear him leave the parking lot which is adjacent to the stadium..approximately 200-300 meters away. Now that i think about it, thats not too bad. I guess when compared too my hooker its loud as hell...

Thanks for all the feedback, so you guys would recommend hooker over flowmaster?
Truthfully i've never heard either, my mechanic recommended the 40's, and I didnt know what a single muffler --> duel outlet setup would sound

Ive got a Flowmaster 40 delta series dual out. It's not too loud (the wife thinks it is though) Im running stock manifolds and no cat. It's 2.5" in and out. Ive got a 305TBI under the hood as well. Basically Id say its low and deep until 1700 rpms then it starts to get higher pitched until 2500, thats when it gets the old school muscle car raspy bite to it. Its not nearly as obnoxious as glass packs but much meaner than stock.
To the person that had a friend with a single out 40 series. It sounds much louder without any tips on it. When I got my car only tip was installed so the other side was dumping directly under the car. That was annoyingly loud inside the car and even was a little louder outside the car as well. I installed the other tip and it made all the difference.
Next year when I upgrade everything to 3" Im installing the hooker catback because its $50 cheaper than the flowmaster through Summit.

Just get the 80 series... for a single exhaust system they sound great. I had one on mine for a few years and i always enjoyed it. I'm running TD's with 40's now and IMO it sounds much better.. but that's TD's

go with magnaflow way better muffler then flowmaster and way better then the v-force i heard one on a lt1 it was nothing great i have been doing alot of exhaust reseach lately your muffler is the most important part of your exhaust it don't matter if you got $500 headers if you got a $40 muffler say you have 350 hp. but the muffler you have is rated for 200 hp. and yes mufflers can only flow so much hp. before they become restricked thats just killin your power the fast way to make hp. is let the motor breath in and out im not saying that the magnaflow is the best muffler out there but its not going to kill your wallet and it flows really well and sounds tuff

I put a 40 series dual in dual out on a 6.0l vortech and was completely disappointed with the sound.
I have a borla system heddman shorties custom 2.5 y-pipe no cat. It is ridiculously loud, my bro can hear it over his flowmaster (w/cat) tops on windows up, from 100yds.
I recently hung a hooker super comp, no cat and would trade for one in a heartbeat soundS AWESOME!!!!
