buying coated headers vs. having them coated

If I buy coated Hookers or coated Heddmans or Coated Whatevers, is the quality generally as good as buying painted headers and sending them off to Jet Hot or a similar company?

I'm in the process of deciding what to do with my headers. I currently have painted i.e. rusted Heddmans on the car. Over the winter while I do heads/cam/intake I'd like to either send those out to get coated, or buy a new set and have them coated, or just buy a coated set.

I thought I remembered hearing some people complain that their coated headers weren't holding up, so I figured I'd poll the community.

I feel that you will get a better job done when you purchase them and have them sent out to get done by a 3rd party, such as JetHot. Another option is looking at the JetHot site and checking to see if they offer the headers your looking at. You might be able to get them cheaper through JetHot.

Plus I also like the fact that if you wanted them coated but needed to do something before hand you wouldn't be messing up the job that the header manuf. did before sending it to you. Like welding in 02 bungs and what not.

That's my

My Jet hot coated hooker 2055's still look good after a year. Cant say the same for my dynomax coated ones they look terrible after 3 years on my 67 pick up. But they were a lot cheaper!

I would buy them, do a mock installation, make any changes you need, then have them coated. I have installed four different types of headers into thirdgen cars and ALL of them required at least some modification.

My heddmans fit perfect with no mods necessary, but I too would be surprised if that happened again.
