I smell exhaust, but there is no exhaust leak, and the smell is when the car is running, and for a little while when the car is off?

Do some aftermarket mufflers do this?

Yeah, that's the OBVIOUS way, didn't need your help to figure out that

Other ways, hopefully like hitting it with a broomstick, and seeing if it's hollow is kind of what I'm aiming at.

Have you checked to see if you have any leaks in your manifolds?

I understand this isn't really going to help you, but I can easily tell if a street car has a cat or not. It just gives off a certain smell when there is no cat on the exhaust.

take a wrench. hit the cat, not your pet cat.... and you'll know if its plugged or hollow.. Thunk noise is plugged (Not gutted) and its just totally obvious...

I was just going to mention what IROC5.7 said. My way to describe it, is like a boat. Those don't have cats or mufflers or anything. Pure, raw, mostly burned hydrocarbons.
