alright, stock y pipe question

alright well it looks like im just gonna buy a new replacement y- pipe for the 82 t/a 305 application for the 350 install in my 82

i need to find out from ya'll about the shape of the very end of the y- pipe at the converter bolt flange down under there

in 82-92 were they all curved just before the flange ?

none were straight back shaped ?

which ones were round pipe and which were the bigger oval shaped

i know the LG4 were smaller and round, in which is what i would want

if any y-pipes undert these cars any years were straight-back shaped just in front of the converter then what years and what engines were they in?

v-8

i ask and need to find out because whatever y pipe i get i will have to hack off the converter flange so i can conect a straigt piece of pipe to the original intermediate exhaust pipe that is under the car still

no converter, was already gone since before i got the car and im not putting one on it

thanks for anything

I know this answers zero of your questions, but have you checked out the Mac replacement ypipe? The picture does not show that it has the cat flange and it supposedly mates up to the factory manifolds, is mandrel bent, and is true 2.5" head pipes to 3". LINK

hmmm

i sent them an email asking about one for an 82 trans am 5.0 i dont know why they list it 86-92 ??

interesting.

thanks

I have that Y-Pipe on my car, and it's nice! It's bends are exactly stock. The last leg of the pipe angles inward toward the stock cat location. However, the leg before that last bend is parallel to the length of the car. So if you're not running a cat and apparently have a custom-shaped exhaust system, you could cut that pipe off anywhere you want.

As for why it's for '86+, my guess would be because of the slip-fit where it meets the cat. I think some of the earlier years had a flanged connection with the cat. But again, for your application, that wouldn't matter--especially if you cut-off the end anyway.

oh!

so 86 and later are not flanged ?!

yes ?

no ?

please confirm

but then at the same token are the 86 up all not straight back at the last leg of the collector of the y pipe ?

what is the leg for that bends towards center of the car for ?

is it to clear suspension a-arm cross or what ?

\
if i were to hack it off at the last bend so i could put a piece of straight pipe on it would it clear the suspension and everything?

this is what im trying to find out here

so i can get this 350 in this car finally

its killin me over here

i have been trying to find out info like this for months if not longer, to no avail...

if someone had a pic of under neath a car with stock y pipe under it either 82 t- 85,
or 86 up
that would be great...

cuz i am just lost here,

thanks

i just went up to o reilly auto parts to look up stock y pipes and well 82 is a one year pipe

hum

and then 83 to about 87 is another and then about 88 and up is a third one probably

wth ?

what was different in 82 than 83-up ?

this is getting insane

i ordered the 83 to 87 or so one and gonna check it out in the am

the exhaust book shows only one y pipe for the 82 and the 83-87 one and shows the end of it to be perfectly straight with a very slight slant to it starting at where the left and right pipe are welded to the Y

so i dunno.....

this iss so damn freaking complicated grrrrr i just want a damn y pipe to put on the damn car thats straight pipe outlet

and i need one like yesterday, i need ot get the engine in it finally,i been waiting 6 damn years to get to do this

dammit

pissing me the hell off

i tell ya.....

i realy wish someone knew the shape of the stock 305 y pipes in these cars

seems know one has any idea at all, as if no one has ever been under one and worked on them

but i know better than that because i know every day someone somewhere is removing a damn stock v-8 pipe and putting aftermarket stuff on in place of it

so what is the deal here ?

doesnt anyone know anything about these pipes ?

thanks

OK, look at these pics.... it must angle back towards the center of the car in order to clear the floorpan, once it gets close to the drive shaft, it turns backwards and runs parallel to the driveshaft before going over the rear axle.
This is obviously not the stock muffler setup, but the pipes do run in the stock location.

slight angle ok neat

so straight back on the oputlet of the y pipe is not good it looks like

although that could really actually be simply corrected by bending the pipe thats going in place of where the converter was

in all reality

so either way it doesnt matter it looks like

just to clear the pass side floor pan

great

i appreciate

im just frustrated and want to get this engine ni and done ASAP like yesterday and if this y pipe thats gona be in the store in the am looks good then the engnie is gonna be sitting in the car by the end of tomorrow i hope

it should, its gonna be alot of freakin work and be 95 degrees out and i gotta move a crap house of junk scrap metal and tear down the shed i built over the car to store it in in oreder to evne be able ot open the door on the car to get it pushed out into the open so i can evne start on it,

junk fridge and trannies and other junk in the way first to relocate to somewhere i dont know where yet and be able to hid out of sight again so the city guy doesnt b#@$!tch

plus i gottapull the engine out of the truck its in right now and thats out in gravel

oh and then thursday its supposed to be rain rain rain all day long..

hum

tomorrow should be fun...

thanks

mmmmmm....... rain. You lucky bastard.

Yea, it's all about how that pax side floorpan drops down like that, so they had to angle the exhuast back toward the center.

Have fun!
