Bad Catalytic converter Q

I thought my muffler bit the dust so I ran out and bought a new one. If I had looked into it just a little more I would have noticed it wasnt the muffler at all but the catalytic converter. My question is how much driving can I do with it in less than good condition and what kind of damage can be done. One person told me to take it out all together and drive the car that way untill I can afford to buy a new one. Is that a bad idea er what?

Re: Bad Catalytic converter Q

well by bad u mean pieces are running througout the exhaust? if its falling apart id take it apart and get all the pieces out of there..u dont want them plugging up the exhaust caus then that exhaust will be backing up into the engine and could crack manifolds and stuff with the excessive heat.

You have a few options depending on where you live. First option if you have testing is to gut the cat and run a pipe through it so it appears that you still have the cat installed, second option is to instal an after market high flow cat (fairly inexpensive) third option if you have no testing is to gut that sucker or just get rid og it. If you have no O2 sensors after the cat then you will be ok. For now I would just gut it if I were you until you either decide what you are going to do or have the dough to fix it.

Re: Bad Catalytic converter Q

I live in NY but I have WI plates on it so I can get away with alot more than I would with NY plates. I dont think theres anything floating around in the exaust but I'll go ahead and knock the guts out and throw it back on just so nothing does happen. Thanks y'all.
